At a press conference, Rokita condemned illegal immigration as a significant \u200cnational issue, attributing the problem to President\u200d Biden&#8217;s policies and\u2064 claiming that every state is now affected by the situation. Dressed in an\u2062 American flag tie and just after attending \u200da naturalization ceremony, Rokita criticized Redman for <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">maintaining sanctuary\u2064 city practices<\/a>, arguing that such policies provide safety for &#8220;criminal aliens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rokita stated that the \u2062local police department failed to honor\u2064 nine detainer requests \u200dfrom federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and expressed his commitment to enforcing compliance with immigration laws across Indiana. He emphasized that\u2062 the\u2063 state law requires police\u200d to communicate and cooperate with \u2064federal officials, not necessarily enforce federal laws. The attorney general has previously worked\u200b successfully with other regions in Indiana to ensure compliance with immigration statutes. \u200dIn addition to the lawsuit against Redman, Rokita is involved in similar \u2062actions against other counties.<\/p>\n<p>Rokita noted the broader\u200d impact of illegal immigration on local services and infrastructure, highlighting issues such as strained healthcare, schools, and housing. He expressed his \u200bdetermination to collaborate with law enforcement and aid in addressing illegal immigration in Indiana, asserting that it would require collective effort to resolve these challenges.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Indiana&rsquo;s Attorney General Todd Rokita&nbsp;publicly allied himself to the president&rsquo;s national immigration enforcement operation last week by announcing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/image.subscription.in.gov\/lib\/fe2e11747364047b721071\/m\/1\/280007d1-7525-4aae-9120-a34181a8a93f.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;against a sheriff he said was maintaining sanctuary city policies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Illegal immigration, as opposed to legal migration, is maybe the biggest issue we are facing right now in our country,&rdquo; Rokita said at press conference held at South Bend&rsquo;s County City Building, the base for both the city&rsquo;s Democrat officials and the county&rsquo;s Republican ones. &ldquo;President Joe Biden opened our border and created a crisis that now needs to be fixed. Because of him and his aiders and abettors right here in Indiana, every state is now a border state and every one, including us right here, are paying the price for this lawlessness.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dressed in an American flag tie and having just come from a naturalization ceremony, Rokita called out St. Joseph County&rsquo;s Sheriff Bill Redman for being part of the problem. Redman, he said, has persistently refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities on detainment requests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, our office sued St. Joseph County Sheriff Redman and his department over their persistent practice of refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. This includes refusing to notify ICE properly about the release of ILLEGAL aliens and also refusing to honor&hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/geOAr9dD42\">pic.twitter.com\/geOAr9dD42<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; AG Todd Rokita (@AGToddRokita) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGToddRokita\/status\/1882930631279349907?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>St. Joseph County is famous for the University of Notre Dame, and past home to former Transportation Secretary and Democrat &ldquo;Mayor Pete&rdquo; Buttigieg and Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. While Indiana is a red state, South Bend is more purple. Rokita is a Republican. Redman is a Democrat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This deliberate decision to not cooperate with federal immigration authorities is giving safe harbor to criminal aliens that need to be removed from our country and this county. It is making St. Joseph County act as a magnet to attract more illegals to want to come live here and commit crime here,&rdquo; Rokita said.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney general noted that the St. Joseph County Police Department failed to honor nine detainer requests from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-refuses-to-deport-illegal-immigrant-who-allegedly-scrawled-swastikas-on-d-c-union-station\/\" title=\"Biden Administration Refuses to Deport Illegal Immigrant Who Allegedly Scrawled Swastikas on D.C. Union Station\">federal immigration law enforcement<\/a> between March and September 2024, and as many as four more since then. After receiving unsatisfactory responses by Redman to letters sent to him in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AGToddRokita\/status\/1883164069102010767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">October&nbsp;and December<\/a>, and after repeatedly warning that his failure to comply would result in a lawsuit, Rokita sued: &ldquo;I refuse as your A.G. to just stand here and watch the lawlessness happen from law enforcement officials.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While Redman&rsquo;s office, in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SJCPD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook statement<\/a>, challenged the suit, saying the department does cooperate and communicate with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Rokita replied that ICE doesn&rsquo;t think so, because&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/sites\/cis.org\/files\/KML\/Sanctuary\/Detainer-Acceptance-June-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ICE listed St. Joseph County as a non-cooperative institution.<\/a>&nbsp;&rdquo;We have a difference of opinion,&rdquo; Rokita said.<\/p>\n<p>Rokita noted that he has worked successfully in other areas of the state to ensure that police followed the law. He said he worked with West Lafayette police to revise their policies ensuring enforcement of federal immigration laws, and that East Chicago officials also repealed its unlawful immigration ordinance in response to his inquiries. Gary officials, he said, also complied after being pressed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rokita said a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2024\/bills\/senate\/181\/details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law passed last year<\/a>&nbsp;by Indiana&rsquo;s General Assembly gave him the right to sue to assure compliance with&nbsp;statutes requiring cooperation with federal immigration officials.&nbsp;State law, he noted, does not require the police to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-tells-missouri-they-cant-disregard-federal-gun-laws\/\" title=\"DOJ Tells Missouri They Can\u2019t Disregard Federal Gun Laws\">enforce federal law<\/a>, just to communicate and cooperate with federal law enforcement. This means they also cannot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cuellar-blames-abbott-for-three-immigrant-drownings-the-state-bears-responsibility\/\" title=\"Cuellar holds Abbott accountable for three immigrant drownings: &#039;State is at fault\">hinder federal law enforcement<\/a> or help detainees.<\/p>\n<p>Rokita said he also is involved in a lawsuit with the Monroe County sheriff, who refused to cooperate with him on illegal immigration enforcement. Monroe County includes Bloomington, Indiana, home to Indiana University-Bloomington.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepRudyYakym\/status\/1882865824450695257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republican Rep. Rudy Yakym<\/a>, who represents St. Joseph County, made a statement on X, saying: &ldquo;Thank you to @AGToddRokita for your work to ensure immigration laws are enforced in St. Joseph County.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rokita said he was already working on illegal immigration enforcement before Donald Trump re-took office, but appreciates now having a partner in the White House. The Indiana General Assembly,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/01\/24\/indiana-immigration-trump-executive-order-statehouse-illegal-law-enforcement-ice\/77901149007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the Indianapolis Star<\/a>, is also working on nearly a dozen bills that deal with illegal immigration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rokita emphasized that illegal immigration stresses law enforcement; overwhelms local hospitals, health-care facilities, and schools; and stresses housing and labor markets.&nbsp;He added that he is investigating potential labor trafficking and has sent civil investigative demands to such employers as Tyson Foods in Logansport, the Cass County Health Department, the Logansport Community School Corporation, and the Jackson County Industrial Development Corporation, among others.&nbsp;Civil investigative demands, he noted, are not an accusation of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>Newly elected Republican Sen. Jim Banks and Yakym also expressed concern last year about the huge influx of migrants in Logansport &ldquo;overwhelming&rdquo; the city, including the schools, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/16\/us-news\/logansport-indiana-begs-for-help-with-migrant-influx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made national news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of schools, Rokita said he hasn&rsquo;t focused on them but has received information about some schools not cooperating with the Trump administration.
