That has riled employee unions and some workers, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/22\/us\/politics\/trump-order-discrimination-federal-hiring.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> the <em>New York Times <\/em>the tactic feels like something out of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<p>But previous DEI bans have been met with resistance, often of the underground variety. <\/p>\n<p>For example, after Texas banned DEI programs at the state&rsquo;s public universities on Jan. 1, 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">hidden camera footage discovered employees admitting<\/a> to finding &ldquo;creative&rdquo; ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2861701\/texas-universities-implement-dei-after-statewide-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"maintain DEI initiatives\">maintain DEI initiatives<\/a> while still technically complying with the ban. <\/p>\n<p>A Texas A&amp;M at Galveston employee identified as Rachel Ball <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2861701\/texas-universities-implement-dei-after-statewide-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> in one recording that &ldquo;we&rsquo;re not allowed to say &lsquo;DEI&rsquo; anymore&rdquo; but that her office had &ldquo;just rebranded, so we&rsquo;re still doing the same work. We just can&rsquo;t call it that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The University of Texas, San Antonio initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/today\/2023\/12\/story\/sb17-impacts-office-of-inclusive-excellence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"announced\">announced<\/a> it would simply rename its DEI Office of Inclusive Excellence as the Office of Campus and Community Belonging, though it later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2711335\/universities-attempt-to-thread-needle-amid-growing-public-pressure-against-dei\/?utm_campaign=msn_feed&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=msn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reversed course\">reversed course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those issues may be what the Trump administration had in mind in ordering federal workers to identify DEI rebranding efforts. <\/p>\n<p>At least one example of DEI rebranding has emerged at the federal level. The <em>Daily Mail <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14315443\/ATF-DEI-job-change-Trump-executive-order.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reported\">reported<\/a> that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives attempted to rename its Chief Diversity Officer as a &ldquo;senior executive&rdquo; to circumvent the new federal ban. <\/p>\n<p>Each federal agency has been tasked with compiling lists of all DEI offices and workers and executing a &ldquo;reduction-in-force&rdquo; against them. DEI officers across the federal government have been placed on paid leave ahead of planned removals, and DEI-focused web pages at various agencies have been taken down.<\/p>\n<p>The move, which Trump campaigned on during the 2024 election, has drawn pushback from some labor unions and Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley decried Trump&rsquo;s DEI crackdown, saying, &ldquo;A diverse federal workforce that looks like the nation it serves, with the lowest gender and racial pay gaps in the country. We should all be proud of that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ultimately, these attacks on DEIA are just a smokescreen for firing civil servants, undermining the apolitical civil service, and turning the federal government into an army of yes-men loyal only to the president, not the Constitution,&rdquo; Kelley said. <\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChadPergram\/status\/1882516985415876944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1882516985415876944%7Ctwgr%5E574d8bfa1f5982a2a57f43d0aa330c9d892eeb0d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftherightscoop.com%2Fhakeem-jeffries-gives-dumbass-definition-of-dei-to-claim-its-an-american-value%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a>, &ldquo;Diversity, equity, and inclusion are American values,&rdquo; adding, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s about economic opportunity. It&rsquo;s about merit for everyone, based on what you know, not who you know.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But Trump&rsquo;s executive orders shutting down DEI offices say they are an enemy of merit, indicating the term may mean different things to different audiences.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The injection of &lsquo;diversity, equity, and inclusion&rsquo; (DEI) into our institutions has corrupted them by replacing hard work, merit, and equality with a divisive and dangerous preferential hierarchy,&rdquo; reads a Day One executive order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/initial-rescissions-of-harmful-executive-orders-and-actions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"revoking\">revoking<\/a> dozens of former President Joe Biden&rsquo;s executive actions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While a template email sent from the White House Office of Personnel Management reads that &ldquo;failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences,&rdquo; some agencies have taken it a step further.
