Madison County in the Metro East became the first nonrural county to pass the referendum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As part of their 2025 agenda, Indiana GOP lawmakers led by House Speaker Todd Huston, R-Fishers, introduced a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2025\/bills\/house\/1008\/details%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bill<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;in the Indiana legislature that would create the Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission. The commission would study whether to recommend absorption of Illinois counties that want to secede.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To all of our neighbors to the west, we hear your frustrations and invite you to join us in low-cost, low-tax Indiana,&rdquo; Huston told&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q0llo1E0uB8&amp;ab_channel=WISH-TV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WISH-TV<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Huston added that the bill was not trying to stir trouble but address the concerns of Illinois residents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston, R-Fishers, tells WISH-TV they want to welcome disgruntled Illinois counties into Illinois. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker says that is a &ldquo;stunt.&rdquo;WISH-TV, Illinois.gov<\/p>\n<p>Gov. J.B. Pritzker has criticized the succession votes, saying separating from Illinois shouldn&rsquo;t even be a discussion, and isn&rsquo;t taking the Indiana legislation seriously.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a stunt and it&rsquo;s not going to happen but I&rsquo;ll just say that Indiana is a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">low-wage state<\/a> that doesn&rsquo;t protect workers, does not provide health care for people when they&rsquo;re in need,&rdquo; Pritzker said at an unrelated event this week. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think it&rsquo;s very attractive for anyone in Illinois.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov\/dA\/266b7f9fc7\/2023%252023-001%2520COUNTIES%2520%2520Authority%2520of%2520Non-Home-Rule%2520County%2520to%2520Secede%2520from%2520the%2520State%2520of%2520Illinois.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;non<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-attorney-general-pushes-back-against-county-seeking-to-secede-and-join-missouri\/\" title=\"Illinois AG opposes county&#039;s bid to join Missouri.\">-home-rule counties<\/a> in Illinois, which is every country except Cook County, do not have the power to secede.
