She emphasized \u2064that the Senate must ensure that the next attorney general \u2062is dedicated to maintaining \u200cthis respect. However, McCord has a controversial background as \u200bshe formerly led the DOJ&#8217;s investigation into the\u2064 Trump campaign regarding \u200calleged connections to Russian \u2064interference in the 2016 election. This investigation relied\u2062 on the Steele Dossier, funded \u200dby Clinton&#8217;s campaign, to obtain surveillance warrants under \u2062the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance\u2064 Act (FISA). Additionally, a 2019 inspector\u2063 general\u2019s report revealed McCord&#8217;s involvement \u200din\u200b the investigation, which\u200c she discussed in her podcast &#8220;Prosecuting Donald Trump.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>During the second confirmation hearing for Attorney General Nominee Pamela Bondi, the former Department of Justice top official who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/top-national-security-official-leaving-justice-department-middle-trump-russia-n749196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led<\/a> the phony &ldquo;Russiagate&rdquo; investigation of Donald Trump claimed America&rsquo;s top law officers are responsible for &ldquo;preventing&rdquo; the agency&rsquo;s &ldquo;weaponization.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Mary McCord, a former DOJ assistant attorney general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S__FBYGl0wQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a> as a witness during Thursday&rsquo;s hearing that &ldquo;public respect&rdquo; for the attorney general and the DOJ comes from &ldquo;impartial adherence to the rule of law, free from improper political influence.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Senate should ensure that the next attorney general is committed to taking the steps to earn that respect,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>But McCord was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-natsec-adviser-casts-doubt-on-w-h-o-report-on-pandemic-origin-china-refuses-to-turn-over-data\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s NatSec Adviser Casts Doubt On W.H.O. Report On Pandemic Origin: China Refuses To Turn Over Data\">top national security official<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/top-national-security-official-leaving-justice-department-middle-trump-russia-n749196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led<\/a> the DOJ&rsquo;s hoax investigation of the Trump campaign for supposed &ldquo;ties to Russia&rsquo;s meddling in the 2016 election,&rdquo; as NBC reported. Under McCord&rsquo;s leadership, the FBI used the fabricated Steele Dossier &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/02\/new-documents-suggest-steele-dossier-deliberate-setup-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paid for<\/a> by Clinton&rsquo;s campaign &mdash; to obtain a warrant to spy on members of Trump&rsquo;s campaign team under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). <\/p>\n<p>According to a 2019 inspector general&rsquo;s report, McCord &mdash; who has spent the last few years co-hosting an MSNBC podcast called &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/winners.webbyawards.com\/2024\/podcasts\/shows\/crime-justice\/282980\/prosecuting-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prosecuting Donald Trump<\/a>&rdquo; &mdash; admitted she &ldquo;was involved in certain aspects of the investigation,&rdquo; including the first FISA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/FISA%20Warrant%20Application%20for%20Carter%20Page.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">application<\/a> to spy on Trump adviser Carter Page in September and October 2016. <\/p>\n<p>When NPR asked in 2019 how McCord defended the DOJ&rsquo;s actions, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/12\/18\/789218039\/secret-u-s-court-issues-public-rebuke-of-fbi-over-russia-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blamed<\/a> &ldquo;a failure of the FBI to apprise Department of Justice attorneys&rdquo; of &ldquo;pertinent facts and relevant facts that should have been provided.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The lawyers and law enforcement officials at the Department of Justice are critical to preventing the weaponization of the department and preserving impartial adherence to the rule of law,&rdquo; McCord said during Thursday&rsquo;s hearing.&ldquo;For the attorney general, this means taking seriously their oath of office, which is to the Constitution &hellip; It means recusal if their impartiality regarding any particular investigation or case could reasonably be questioned. And it <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">means reaffirming long-standing policies limiting contacts<\/a> between the department and the White House on specific investigations and cases.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>McCord said the role of attorney general requires &ldquo;not targeting people or associations for investigation or prosecution based on protected speech,&rdquo; &ldquo;not executing searches without a warrant,&rdquo; and &ldquo;not denying the equal protection of the law to all people within the United States.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Bondi <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/15\/grassley-calls-on-bondi-to-ensure-political-weaponization-of-the-doj-never-happens-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicated<\/a> during her first hearing on Wednesday that, if confirmed as attorney general, she will prosecute &ldquo;every case &hellip; based on the facts and the law that is applied in good faith.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>While McCord has not publicly faced any consequences for her role in the Russiagate investigation or improper FISA surveillance of Trump&rsquo;s team, she suggested there would be &ldquo;no immunity for Attorney General [Nominee] Bondi if she were to engage in illegal activity or unconstitutional activity in carrying out a directive of Donald Trump.&rdquo; McCord also maintained that, throughout her tenure, the Department of Justice &ldquo;always &hellip; followed the facts and the law, and did not target any person for investigation based on political reasons.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., called out the DOJ&rsquo;s political targeting of Donald Trump, particularly over the last four years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve heard a lot about the newfound concern that my Democrat colleagues have about independence in the AG&rsquo;s office,&rdquo; Schmitt said. &ldquo;Given the last four years, it is ironic.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt went on to say he believes the reason Americans have lost &ldquo;trust and faith in the Department of Justice&rdquo; is because they &ldquo;saw exactly what happened over the last four years, which [was] a very obvious attempt to try to jail a political opponent.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He expressed his support for Bondi and for &ldquo;what she can do [to] try and restore credibility to an agency that has been weaponized and politicized&rdquo; to &ldquo;get it back to its core function, which is objectively administering justice and taking on violent crime.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Logan Washburn is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lawsuit-clark-county-keeps-commercial-addresses-on-voter-rolls\/\" title=\"Lawsuit: Clark County Keeps Commercial Addresses On Voter Rolls\">staff writer covering election integrity<\/a>.
