Cornyn further asserted that misinformation surrounds Section 702\u2019s application, stressing that it is designed to protect against foreign threats and asserting\u2062 the necessity for \u200dlegal compliance in any surveillance actions. the hearings reflected ongoing debates over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russias-pak-da-stealth-bomber-will-never-fly-u-s-defense-officials\/\" title=\"Russia\u2019s PAK DA Stealth Bomber \u201cWill Never Fly\u201d, U.S. Defense Officials\">intelligence-gathering methods<\/a> and privacy concerns within\u2063 the context of\u2064 national security.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>During Pam Bondi&rsquo;s confirmation hearings for attorney general, top Senate Republicans asked her to support the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which federal agents have abused to spy on Americans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The FBI and Department of Justice used FISA to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/07\/watchdog-demands-dhs-inspector-general-investigate-new-abuses-of-surveillance-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spy<\/a> on former President Donald Trump&rsquo;s 2016 campaign, as The Federalist previously reported. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.gov\/foreign-intelligence-surveillance-act\/1237-fisa-section-702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Section 702<\/a> of the legislation allows federal agencies to collect communications of noncitizens, outside the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/20\/1246076114\/senate-passes-reauthorization-surveillance-program-fisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">without a warrant<\/a>. It supposedly bars the government from spying on Americans, but the CIA was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/17\/the-cia-got-caught-spying-on-americans-again-its-time-for-congress-to-make-them-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caught<\/a> in 2022 using the law &mdash; which Congressional Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/house-votes-renew-fisa-spying-tool-earlier-republican-revolt-rcna147557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reauthorized<\/a> last year &mdash; to spy on Americans.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would like to have a strategy to deal with the ISIS threat that&rsquo;s beyond just the law enforcement model,&rdquo; Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UzGmbDtS8IQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> to Bondi. &ldquo;Does that make sense to you, that we should use every tool in the toolbox?&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Such an approach &ldquo;includes wrapping in our state and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/washington-post-removes-criticism-of-hamas-hostages-parents-after-deeming-it-unacceptable\/\" title=\"Washington Post removes criticism of Hamas hostage&#039;s parents after deeming it &#039;unacceptable\">local officials&#038;rdquo<\/a>; and &ldquo;better cooperation&rdquo; across the nation and world, Bondi replied.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Do you support reauthorizing FISA in 2025?&rdquo; asked Graham.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I believe [section] 702 is up in 2026,&rdquo; Bondi said. &ldquo;We will closely be looking at FISA as a very important tool.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Do you agree that 702 provides important intel-gathering capability to protect our nation?&rdquo; Graham asked. Bondi called it &ldquo;extremely important.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, also pushed Bondi on the matter. He said 60 percent of the president&rsquo;s intelligence brief comes from Section 702. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been called the crown jewel of U.S. intelligence,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn claimed Section 702 &ldquo;cannot be legally used to spy on American citizens&rdquo; and if that happens, it should be &ldquo;prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.&rdquo; He then discussed Biden&rsquo;s temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/20\/1246076114\/senate-passes-reauthorization-surveillance-program-fisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extension<\/a> of the law until 2026 &ldquo;for the use of the intelligence community to target foreign threats to our national security.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;d like you just confirm here on the record that you will enforce that law and you can support the law as it is written,&rdquo; Cornyn said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Senator, I haven&rsquo;t read the entire 702 in front of you, but I will commit to reading that and doing everything I can to keep America safe again,&rdquo; Bondi replied.<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn suggested concerns about Section 702 are &ldquo;misinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think there&rsquo;s a lot of misinformation with regard to how Section 702 works &hellip; it is not used to spy on American people,&rdquo; Cornyn said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn referenced a memo from former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe &mdash; Trump&rsquo;s pick for CIA director &mdash; allegedly saying &ldquo;a warrant requirement may not achieve its intended objectives and could hinder national security efforts.&rdquo; Cornyn asked Bondi if she shares that concern.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would read his memo, and I will speak to you after I read his memo,&rdquo; Bondi said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn also pushed FISA on Ratcliffe during his confirmation hearing the same day. He claimed the law only lets federal officials target &ldquo;foreigners overseas, not Americans.&rdquo; He asked Ratcliffe about requiring a warrant to search surveillance information.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Is there any way for you to go to court and establish the requirements of a warrant or probable cause in order to query that data?&rdquo; Cornyn asked.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You really don&rsquo;t have the information to obtain the warrant and the process of obtaining the warrant &mdash; we&rsquo;re talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-demand-hold-on-biden-commerce-pick-over-huawei-concerns\/\" title=\"Republicans Demand Hold on Biden Commerce Pick Over Huawei Concerns\">national security issues<\/a> where sometimes minutes matter,&rdquo; Ratcliffe said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While both Cornyn and Ratcliffe acknowledged potential &ldquo;abuse&rdquo; of FISA, the senator claimed requiring a warrant is &ldquo;not the answer.&rdquo; As in the Bondi hearing, he suggested concerns come from &ldquo;misinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about how FISA works &hellip;&rdquo; Cornyn said. &ldquo;But the fact of the matter is it&rsquo;s illegal to use this tool to spy on American citizens, and there are protocols in place to lessen the likelihood.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Never mind that, while official FISA procedures supposedly ensure the &ldquo;DOJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justsecurity.org\/38422\/aint-easy-fisa-warrant-fbi-agent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">verifies<\/a> the accuracy of every fact stated in the application,&rdquo; the FBI and DOJ used the phony Hillary Clinton-backed Steele Dossier to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/12\/09\/13-things-to-look-for-in-the-inspector-general-fisa-abuse-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spy<\/a> on Trump&rsquo;s 2016 campaign. FBI Director Christopher Wray &mdash; who announced he will <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/11\/wray-resigns-in-disgrace-after-using-fbi-to-persecute-enemies-and-protect-lawbreakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">step down<\/a> when Trump takes office &mdash; was also able to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/01\/14\/fbi-director-wrays-fisa-abuse-response-flips-justice-the-bird\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adjust<\/a> the bureau&rsquo;s FISA approach internally.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
