This change marks \u2062the first alteration to the bill,which had previously received\u200c bipartisan support in the\u2063 House. The legislation mandates that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">federal authorities detain illegal\u200c immigrants<\/a> who are charged,arrested,or convicted of theft-related crimes until their deportation. Additionally, it grants state\u2063 attorneys general greater authority \u200cto file lawsuits against\u200c the\u2064 federal government concerning its management of illegal immigration. The amendment on law enforcement, proposed by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), would add assaulting officers or any crime causing &ldquo;serious bodily injury&rdquo; to the list of offenses that trigger mandatory detention.<\/p>\n<p>It passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1191\/vote_119_1_00003.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"70-25\">70-25<\/a>, with 21 Democrats crossing the aisle to vote with all Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate considered a second amendment, filed by Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), but it failed along party lines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1191\/vote_119_1_00004.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"46-49\">46-49<\/a>. It would have removed the provision governing states suing the federal government, a component Democrats say would &ldquo;encourage endless litigation&rdquo; by Republican attorneys general as currently written.<\/p>\n<p>Coons made the case that passing his amendment would assuage many of Democrats&rsquo; concerns. Democrats fear the litigation component could also result in any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-amends-laken-riley-immigation-bill-to-cover-assaulted-officers-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Senate amends Laken Riley immigation bill to cover assaulted officers - Washington Examiner\">singular judge barring visas<\/a> from entire countries at the request of Republican states.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I will remind you, our states&rsquo; attorneys general are roughly equally divided between the parties, and attorneys general can now and today sue against what they believe is manifest injustice in the federal immigration system,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;This provision would encourage them to sue down to individual detention and release decisions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From left, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), Sen.
