Or at least it was until Donald Trump replaced Melville&rsquo;s whale as the target of unscrupulous, unprincipled, and sea-sick hunters using imaginary legal harpoons.<\/p>\n<p>The &ldquo;Great Orange Leader&rdquo; replaced the &ldquo;Great White Whale.&rdquo; In both cases the quarry vanquished their pursuers, drowning them in a death of their own making. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-speaks-totally-fascinating-mar-lago-meeting-john-fetterman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a> the victor trailing the flotsam and jetsam of illegitimate prosecutions in his wake.<\/p>\n<p>Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-merchans-new-ruling-hush-money-case-called-massive-trump-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Merchan<\/a> joined the ranks of the vanquished when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-trump-learns-sentence-new-york-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced Donald Trump<\/a> for conviction on charges brought by portly prosecutor Alvin &ldquo;I have nothing upon which to&rdquo; Bragg.<\/p>\n<p>After years of chasing Trump like Melville&rsquo;s mythical white whale Democrats, progressives, and politically weaponized federal agents like their fictional whaling counterparts are left splintered and sunk. Their last harpoon harmlessly reduced to a foam dart.<\/p>\n<p>Merchan held that last skewer, and he missed his target by a mile.<\/p>\n<p> <script type=\"text\/javascript\"> \t\t\tif ( getCookie( \"ff_subbed\" ) ) { \t\t\t\tdocument.getElementById(\"stnvideo\").remove() \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>Moby-Dick was scarred and injured during the penultimate battle, but at least the great fish didn&rsquo;t have to endure the hateful sea captain wishing him &ldquo;godspeed&rdquo; in the aftermath of his utter defeat.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Merchan both wished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-gets-last-laugh-criminal-ruling-radical-democrats-lost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a> the best and introduced Americans to the legal phrase, &ldquo;unconditional discharge&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/codes.findlaw.com\/ny\/penal-law\/pen-sect-65-20\/#:~:text=When%20the%20court%20imposes%20a,a%20final%20judgment%20of%20conviction.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Penal Law Section 65.20<\/a> the sentence of unconditional discharge achieves only one outcome &ndash; the recording of a conviction.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&ldquo;When the court imposes a sentence of unconditional discharge, the defendant shall be released with respect to the conviction for which the sentence is imposed without imprisonment, fine or probation supervision. <strong>A sentence of unconditional discharge is for all purposes a final judgment of conviction.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, a conviction on a nothing-burger of a crime results in nothing: no fine, no jail time, no home confinement. Merchan, no doubt thinking he was getting the last laugh, made certain that Trump enters the White House as its first &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-and-vance-campaign-in-minnesota-in-bid-to-flip-the-state-for-the-first-time-in-five-decades-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Trump and Vance campaign in Minnesota in bid to flip the state for the first time in five decades - Washington Examiner\">convicted felon&#038;rdquo<\/a>;.<\/p>\n<p>So what?<\/p>\n<p>Merchan, Bragg, Engoron, Smith, Willis all boarded their respective prosecutorial whaling skiffs armed with their hate of Trump and an insensible, victimless, and outright made-up quiver of crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Each in turn hurled their missiles, which bounced off Trump&rsquo;s thick skin. In the end his pursuers are left afloat or sinking to destinies of infamy which they all richly deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Where is their quarry? What has become of their great and terrible enemy?<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 20, their nemesis enters the White House for a second time. Boy, they sure showed him.<\/p>\n<p>The political weaponizations of America&rsquo;s legal and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">federal law enforcement systems perpetrated<\/a> for the sole reason of undoing Trump failed. The core corruption these efforts represent may yet be the death of the very agencies used in his pursuit. We cannot be a nation of laws if only some of which are enforced and then only against some of the citizenry.<\/p>\n<p>Melville might well have been speaking about corrupt and power mad establishment aristocracies when he wrote, &ldquo;In this world, shipmates, sin that pays its way can travel freely and without a passport; whereas Virtue, if a pauper, is stopped at all frontiers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Politics is a hotbed of sin and thus has no place for virtue, so we&rsquo;ve been told. Shouldn&rsquo;t we expect virtue, nonetheless?<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s election victory is an unequivocal rejection of lawfare. Americans may never understand the legal ramifications of unconditional discharge, instead they know Trump&rsquo;s victory is an unconditional surrender by progressives, liberals, and the all-out woke imposed by the American people.<\/p>\n<p>As for me, I think I will take Melville&rsquo;s attitude on the future under Trump&rsquo;s second administration, &ldquo;I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I&rsquo;ll go to it laughing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><i><b>The views expressed in this opinion article are those of their author and are not necessarily either d or endorsed by the owners of this website. Merchan may have thought he was victorious by marking Trump as the first \u201cconvicted felon\u201d entering the White House; however, his efforts were futile.<\/p>\n<p>The political weaponization of America&#8217;s legal system aimed at undermining Trump ultimately failed and could jeopardize these very agencies&#8217; integrity. A nation cannot uphold laws if they are selectively enforced against certain citizens only. Melville\u2019s words resonate here: \u201cIn this world&#8230; sin that pays its way can travel freely,\u201d while virtue is often obstructed by power-hungry establishments.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s election victory signifies a clear rejection of such lawfare tactics; although many may not grasp the legal implications behind an unconditional discharge, they recognize Trump&#8217;s win as an undeniable defeat for progressives and liberals imposed by voters\u2019 will.
