This settlement comes after the restaurant \u2063was found to have imposed excessive document\u200c demands on employees verifying their work permits,especially <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">affecting lawful permanent residents<\/a>. The agreement mandates that\u2063 Brick &#038; Bourbon post employee rights in both English and Spanish and\u200d undergo additional reviews of their employment practices. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke\u200b stated that \u200cimposing needless \u200brequirements based on citizenship\u200b status is unlawful and detrimental to both \u2062employees and employers. The investigation by the Justice Department&#8217;s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section began in\u200d February 2023, revealing discriminatory practices during the employment\u200c eligibility verification process.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Justice Department reached an 11th-hour settlement with a Minnesota-based restaurant chain for a $95,000 civil penalty in addition to mandatory employment training after the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-secures-agreement-minnesota-restaurant-group-resolve-immigration-related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required<\/a> &ldquo;more documents than necessary&rdquo; to verify workers&rsquo; permits.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 7-page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/media\/1383941\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">settlement<\/a>, Brick &amp; Bourbon, a restaurant group with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brickandbourbon.com\/location\/eden-prairie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three<\/a> locations in Minnesota, will be required to post forms outlining employees&rsquo; rights in both English and Spanish and undergo additional reviews into employment practices.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is unlawful for employers to impose additional or unnecessary requirements on employees because of their citizenship status when checking their permission to work,&rdquo; Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department&rsquo;s Civil Rights Division said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-secures-agreement-minnesota-restaurant-group-resolve-immigration-related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press relea<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-secures-agreement-minnesota-restaurant-group-resolve-immigration-related\">se<\/a> Monday. &ldquo;Discriminatory treatment during any step of the employment process harms workers who are lawfully participating in our economy and can deprive employers of their talents.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department&rsquo;s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section notified the restaurants of the federal investigation in February 2023. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The investigation found that Respondent required lawful permanent residents, but not similarly-situated U.S. citizens, to present more or different documents than required by law during the employment eligibility verification process,&rdquo; the settlement read. An example includes &ldquo;requiring lawful permanent residents to present a Social Security card&rdquo; after applicants &ldquo;already presented a valid Permanent Resident Card.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The settlement was reached just one week before President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in with a new administration eager to reform the Justice Department. Trump&rsquo;s pick to lead the department, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/01\/13\/trump-cabinet-senate-confirmation-hearings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testify<\/a> before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans,&rdquo; Trump said when he <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/113523536267976149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> her nomination. &ldquo;Not anymore.
