Young is \u200csuing CNN \u200bfor a November 2021 report \u2064that he\u200d claims falsely accused \u2063him of\u200d exploiting Afghans desperate \u2064for evacuation. Notably, a court has\u2064 steadfast\u200c that Young acted legally and criminally.\u200c During his testimony,\u200c Marquardt acknowledged that he\u200b sought evidence of \u2062wrongdoing related to Young but\u200c ultimately found none. Despite \u200dhis claims \u200bof not focusing specifically on Young,interaction messages revealed that he had inquired about \u2064Young multiple times and seemed keen on investigating his activities.Young&#8217;s\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">legal team suggested<\/a> that Marquardt&#8217;s persistent inquiries indicated an \u200dunethical focus on him, raising questions about \u2064the \u2062motivations \u200bbehind the reporting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>CNN Chief National Security Correspondent Alex Marquardt tried to find dirt on U.S. Navy veteran Zachary Young several times and found no evidence of wrongdoing &mdash; yet still went forward with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-defamation-trial-gets-heated-during-third-day-of-hearings\/\" title=\"CNN Defamation Trial Gets Heated During Third Day Of Hearings\">allegedly defamatory story<\/a> anyway, according to Marquardt&rsquo;s testimony.<\/p>\n<p>Young sued CNN after it published a report in November of 2021 that he claims falsely accused  him of exploiting Afghans desperate to be evacuated from Afghanistan on a &ldquo;black market.&rdquo; Notably, a court <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/10\/trial-by-ambush-cnn-defamation-trial-gets-heated-during-third-day-of-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> Young &ldquo;did not act illegally or criminally.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Marquardt took the stand for the first time on Monday and testified that he was indeed &ldquo;looking into&rdquo; &mdash; as described in text messages shown to jurors involving Marquardt &mdash; &ldquo;scams, deceptions, black markets&rdquo; when he began his preliminary reporting on Afghanistan evacuations. While Marquardt later testified that he was &ldquo;never &hellip; going after [Young],&rdquo; lawyers for Young made a case that Marquardt tried seven times to find evidence that Young was involved in wrongdoing but came up empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in one exchange between Marquardt and Mustafa Kazemi (who was evacuated from Afghanistan by an NGO), Marquardt asked: &ldquo;Have you heard of  Zachary Young?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No I have not,&rdquo; Kazemi responded.<\/p>\n<p>Marquardt testified that he &ldquo;was always going to be digging into what Mr. Young was doing,&rdquo; even though he also testified that his report was just about the &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/andy-harris-stresses-trump-getting-resources-to-stop-border-nonsense\/\" title=\"Andy Harris stresses Trump getting resources to stop &#039;border nonsense&#039;\">high prices&#038;rdquo<\/a>; that &ldquo;regular people&rdquo; were paying to be evacuated out of Afghanistan. Young testified that he worked with corporations to evacuate individuals who had sponsors rather than seeking money directly from Afghans. But Marquardt appeared determined to focus on Young, at least according to messages shown to the jury.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Young&rsquo;s attorney presented jurors with a message Marquardt sent in which he said he &ldquo;zeroed in on&rdquo; Young and another in which Marquardt said he was &ldquo;watching&rdquo; Young.<\/p>\n<p>So why the focus on Young?<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/11\/jake-tappers-lead-in-did-that-editor-takes-the-stand-to-defend-allegedly-defamatory-cnn-report-on-navy-vet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&lsquo;Jake Tapper&rsquo;s Lead-In Did That&rsquo;: Editor Takes The Stand To Defend Allegedly Defamatory CNN Report On Navy Vet<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Judge William Henry, who is overseeing the case, previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/10\/cnns-reckless-smear-tactics-could-cost-them-big-after-latest-court-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found that CNN<\/a> had a narrative it wanted to peddle and used Young as its scapegoat, noting how, <em>before <\/em>talking to Young, Marquardt pitched the story about Young using terms like &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnns-smear-tactics-could-cost-them-after-latest-court-ruling\/\" title=\"CNN&#039;s Smear Tactics Could Cost Them After Latest Court Ruling\">shadowy black market<\/a>,&rdquo; &ldquo;fraud&rdquo; and &ldquo;extortion.&rdquo; Henry said that CNN did this despite having &ldquo;no evidence&rdquo; to back up its &ldquo;black market&rdquo; insinuations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Then fortuitously, a door was opened to obtain information for the piece when Young reached out to [CNN Reporter Katie Bo] Lillis,&rdquo; Henry ruled, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/u-s-navy-veteran-suing-cnn-lands-key-legal-victories-ahead-high-stakes-defamation-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox News<\/a>. &ldquo;Once Young stopped cooperating with the investigative reporters, Marquardt found his &lsquo;fall guy&rsquo; &mdash; Young.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Marquardt also testified on Monday that he &ldquo;didn&rsquo;t know whether people like Mr. Young could actually deliver.&rdquo; Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/10\/trial-by-ambush-cnn-defamation-trial-gets-heated-during-third-day-of-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young successfully evacuate<\/a>d 22 women and one child out of Afghanistan on behalf of the corporations he was working for, but that detail wasn&rsquo;t included in CNN&rsquo;s reporting. Marquardt further testified that he didn&rsquo;t bother calling Audible &mdash; a client of Young&rsquo;s &mdash; because &ldquo;it didn&rsquo;t make sense&rdquo; to him &ldquo;why Audible was operating in Afghanistan.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Marquardt also agreed Monday that he had &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickFondacaro\/status\/1878828640441598242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickFondacaro\/status\/1878829916864893255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence<\/a>&rdquo; that Young ever exploited any Afghans. Marquardt later tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickFondacaro\/status\/1878831193678053501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claim<\/a> he meant that Young was &ldquo;exploiting the situation and not the people.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The jury was also shown text messages between Marquardt and Jill Kornetsky, a CNN source, in which Marquardt said the final version of the story was &ldquo;likely not as harsh about Young as [Kornetsky] hoped&rdquo; for, with Kornetsky responding: &ldquo;Parasites can be hard to exterminate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Yeah,&rdquo; Marquardt agreed in the message exchange.<\/p>\n<p>The message exchange was shown <em>after<\/em> Marquardt testified that the story wasn&rsquo;t pitched to &ldquo;take down&rdquo; Young and that he doesn&rsquo;t &ldquo;do hit pieces.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Subsequent message exchanges presented to jurors <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickFondacaro\/status\/1878838317170741516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show<\/a> Marquardt boasting about how he was going to &ldquo;nail this Zachary Young mf-cker&rdquo; and how his story would be Young&rsquo;s &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickFondacaro\/status\/1878850605114106274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funeral<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Jurors will continue to hear from Marquardt during cross-examination. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/majority-of-voters-recognize-democrat-lawfare-against-trump-is-political-election-interference\/\" title=\"Most voters see Democrat lawfare against Trump as political election interference\">elections correspondent<\/a> at The Federalist.
