Biden himself <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/photos-and-video\/photo\/2017\/01\/president-obama-awards-vice-president-biden-presidential-medal-freedo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"received \">received <\/a>the same distinction from then-President Barack Obama in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2025\/01\/11\/president-biden-awards-presidential-medal-of-freedom-with-distinction-to-his-holiness-pope-francis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"citation\">citation<\/a> for the award described the pope as the &ldquo;People&rsquo;s Pope&rdquo; whose &ldquo;mission of serving the poor has never ceased.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Biden was scheduled to be in Italy this weekend in what was to be his <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-fire-pope-california-italy-df89b74eec47dc94cc87f51601e44c0d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"last foreign visit\">last foreign visit<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-taking-regeneron-drug-remdesivir-therapy-for-coronavirus-diagnosis-ex-wh-doctor-explains\/\" title=\"Trump taking Regeneron drug, Remdesivir therapy for coronavirus diagnosis: ex-WH doctor explains\">president<\/a>. Following Biden&rsquo;s visit to Los Angeles after <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">wildfires caused widespread destruction<\/a> to the Southern California city and the surrounding area, the White House announced the trip would not go on as planned and Biden would stay in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although Biden has not met with Pope Francis in person <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/news\/2024\/pope-will-receive-outgoing-us-president-biden-vatican-jan-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"since \">since<\/a> the summer of last year at the G7 summit, the pope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2024-12\/pope-appeal-prayers-federal-death-row-grace-inmates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"called \">called <\/a>last month for the death sentences of U.S. federal inmates to be commuted, a move Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3269402\/legal-world-reacts-biden-death-row-commutations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"made \">made <\/a>two weeks later. That decision led to considerable outrage from the public, including from President-elect Donald Trump, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3269752\/trump-vows-justice-department-enact-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"vowed \">vowed<\/a> to use the Department of Justice to pursue the death penalty&nbsp;against &ldquo;violent rapists, murderers, and monsters&rdquo; once he takes office.<\/p>\n<p>The award given to the pope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3276322\/biden-giving-medal-freedom-hillary-clinton-george-soros-17-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"follows \">follows<\/a> a ceremony last weekend for 19 other recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, not all of whom were looked on favorably.
