The report, aired\u2062 on November 11, 2021, accused Young of exploiting Afghans through a &#8220;black market&#8221; for evacuation \u200bservices following the U.S. withdrawal\u2062 from Afghanistan.\u2062 Hogan clarified that while he \u200bapproved the story, the term &#8220;black market&#8221; was added by\u200b jake Tapper during the lead-in, arguing that it was \u200can accurate\u2063 description. Though, Young contends that such a label has damaging implications for his reputation and\u200d employment, as it suggests illegal conduct. Zachary Young has sued CNN, arguing their November 11, 2021 report falsely accused him of exploiting Afghans by offering evacuations on a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnns-smear-tactics-could-cost-them-after-latest-court-ruling\/\" title=\"CNN&#039;s Smear Tactics Could Cost Them After Latest Court Ruling\">black market&#038;rdquo<\/a>; following the 2021 U.S. withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan testified Friday that the story he green-lit prior to publication did not include the term &ldquo;black market,&rdquo; and that it was Jake Tapper who included that term.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1889705816\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;The text of the story did not do that,&rdquo; Hogan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JessicaCostescu\/status\/1877835470643638409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a>. &ldquo;The banner and Jake Tapper&rsquo;s lead-in did that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Hogan later testified that he thought describing the situation as a &ldquo;black market&rdquo; was &ldquo;accurate&rdquo; and disputed the allegation that &ldquo;black market&rdquo; has a &ldquo;negative connotation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Young alleges the use of the term &ldquo;black market&rdquo; to describe his evacuation efforts &ldquo;rendered Young permanently unemployable&rdquo; because it implied Young was involved in illegal conduct. Young later testified that his defense contracts <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/08\/jurors-riveted-by-evidence-cnn-defamed-navy-vet-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressly prohibited<\/a> involvement in &ldquo;black markets.&rdquo; Notably, a court also found Young did not commit a crime.<\/p>\n<p>During Thursday&rsquo;s hearing, Young <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/10\/trial-by-ambush-cnn-defamation-trial-gets-heated-during-third-day-of-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a> that CNN never included in their story that he had successfully evacuated nearly two dozen individuals from Afghanistan. Alex Marquardt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/13\/politics\/afghans-exorbitant-costs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> CNN could not confirm &ldquo;whether these operators charging the high fees have successfully evacuated anyone who paid to exit the country, as Young claims.&rdquo; The segment aired on Tapper&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chadwick-bosemans-family-says-late-actor-didnt-put-a-lot-of-value-on-oscars\/\" title=\"Chadwick Boseman\u2019s Family Says Late Actor Didn\u2019t Put A Lot Of Value On Oscars\">show included<\/a> a claim that &ldquo;Afghans trying to get out of the country face a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-defamation-trial-gets-heated-during-third-day-of-hearings\/\" title=\"CNN Defamation Trial Gets Heated During Third Day Of Hearings\">black market full<\/a> of promises, demands of exorbitant fees, and no guarantee of safety or success.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Hogan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JessicaCostescu\/status\/1877835734368817413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a> Friday &ldquo;it wasn&rsquo;t relevant&rdquo; to the story whether Young had succeeded in other evacuations out of Afghanistan. Jurors were also presented internal CNN emails that show CNN Senior Director Emma Lacey-Bordeaux suggesting Marquardt give Young more than two hours to respond. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Two hours is a pretty sharp turn around time,&rdquo;  Lacey-Bordeaux <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JessicaCostescu\/status\/1877846755624018215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in an email. &ldquo;I think we should say that&rsquo;s when we&rsquo;d like it but we can be flexible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Young had previously testified that he needed more than two hours to respond to the inquiry to seek guidance from other individuals and organizations he worked with. Young <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/08\/navy-vet-warned-cnn-it-had-false-info-cnn-aired-it-anyway\/\">also said<\/a> in messages to Marquardt that the two-hour deadline was &ldquo;definitely not a realistic deadline&rdquo; but that &ldquo;in any case, I can tell you for sure, some of your facts\/assertions [are] not accurate, and if they are published, I will seek legal damages.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>CNN still aired the segment, shared it on social media and CNN&rsquo;s website, and re-aired the segment before later issuing an apology months later.
