Members of the ILA then went on strike starting at midnight on October 1. The work stoppage lasted for three days before the two sides mutually agreed to halt the strike and extend the terms of the previous agreement until after the new year. The deadline to reach a new deal was set for January 15.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are pleased to announce that ILA and USMX have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year ILA-USMX Master Contract, subject to ratification, thus averting any work stoppage on January 15, 2025,&rdquo; read a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/08\/union-dockworkers-port-employers-announce-tentative-labor-deal-at-east-coast-and-gulf-ports.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> released by both organizations. &ldquo;This agreement protects current ILA jobs and establishes a framework for implementing technologies that will create more jobs while modernizing East and Gulf coasts ports &ndash; making them safer and more efficient, and creating the capacity they need to keep our supply chains strong.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-celebrates-ups-labor-agreement-a-testament-to-collective-bargaining\/\" title=\"Biden hails UPS labor deal as a &#039;testament&#039; to collective bargaining.\">win-win agreement<\/a> that creates ILA jobs, supports American consumers and businesses, and keeps the American economy the key hub of the global marketplace,&rdquo; both sides noted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A point of contention between the two sides was the increased role of automation and other technological implementations in job roles along the country&rsquo;s docks. The ILA objected to a full conversion of automation, but the sides apparently reached a compromise in the new agreement, CNBC <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/08\/union-dockworkers-port-employers-announce-tentative-labor-deal-at-east-coast-and-gulf-ports.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.
