(Justin Tallis\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An official announcement would make him the first candidate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3277172\/trudeau-resigns-canadian-prime-minister-collapse-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">replace Trudeau<\/a> after the prime minister announced his intent to resign following an election to decide the next leader of the Liberal Party.<\/p>\n<p>Carney was the head of the Bank of Canada from 2007 to 2013, after which he became chairman of the United Kingdom&rsquo;s central bank until 2020. <\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has served as a close adviser to Trudeau on economic issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/spider-man-no-way-home-crushes-box-office-competition-while-matrix-resurrections-and-sing-2-battle-for-number-two-spot\/\" title=\"\u2018Spider-Man: No Way Home\u2019 Crushes Box Office Competition While \u2018Matrix: Resurrections\u2019 and \u2018Sing 2\u2019 Battle For Number Two Spot\">earning high praise<\/a> from the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his experience in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/advisers-plea-with-biden-to-change-his-coronavirus-strategy-as-he-fails-to-shut-down-the-virus-report\/\" title=\"Advisers \u2018Plea\u2019 With Biden To Change His Coronavirus Strategy As He Fails To \u2018Shut Down The Virus\u2019: Report\">high-ranking government positions<\/a>, he has never held elected office.<\/p>\n<p>Carney is only one of multiple candidates widely seen as capable of marshaling the necessary support to take the Liberal Party&rsquo;s helm.<\/p>\n<p>Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, the Cabinet member whose resignation was the final nail in Trudeau&rsquo;s coffin, has also been floated as a possible successor.<\/p>\n<p>She characterized her resignation last month as an act of protest against the government&rsquo;s penchant for &ldquo;political gimmicks&rdquo; while failing to address the threat of staggering tariffs from the United States under the next administration.<\/p>\n<p>During his own resignation speech on Monday, Trudeau expressed a sense of regret that Freeland did not stay on as deputy minister and help overcome the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3279038\/trump-military-force-panama-greenland-economic-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">obstacles facing Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;d really hoped that she would agree to continue as my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/opec-russia-agree-to-drop-oil-prices-to-wipe-out-competition\/\" title=\"OPEC, Russia agree to drop oil prices to wipe out competition\">deputy prime minister<\/a> and take on one of the most important files that not just this government, but this country is facing &mdash;
