Representatives\u200d Eric Burlison (R-MO) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO) have announced their intention to reintroduce legislation aimed at abolishing the\u200b 52-year-old agency, arguing that it duplicates the functions of other federal and state entities such as the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service. Eric Burlison (R-MO) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO) made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\/3237983\/second-amendment-advocates-urge-trump-leash-atf-pick-pro-gun-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">good on a promise<\/a> to reintroduce legislation to kill the 52-year-old agency, claiming it duplicates what other federal and state agencies do.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They&rsquo;re just duplicative,&rdquo; Burlison said in an interview. &ldquo;They overlap a lot of our other agencies, the FBI, that&rsquo;s really under their scope. You have the U.S. Marshals Service. There&rsquo;s a lot of agencies that provide the same level of service.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a lot of things that are being done by the ATF that are not about keeping people safe. Let the taxpayers of your state who are paying your local sheriff, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/man-tries-to-fake-his-own-death-in-mississippi-river-after-child-rape-accusations\/\" title=\"Man attempts to feign death in Mississippi River following child rape allegations.\">local highway patrol<\/a> and police, let them be the ones that tell that local community how to be safe,&rdquo; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Burlison is also eager to kill the National Firearms Act, an Al Capone-era law that requires the regulation, taxation, and ban on some firearms and accessories, such as suppressors.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tillis.senate.gov\/2025\/1\/tillis-colleagues-call-on-atf-to-cease-rulemaking-focus-on-trump-transition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">seven Republican senators<\/a> have called on ATF to pause all rulemaking until Trump takes office. The White House has been criticized for moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">implement eleventh-hour rules<\/a> and regulations that are aimed at tying up Trump&rsquo;s deregulation plans.<\/p>\n<p>ATF Director Steve Dettelbach has already announced plans to step down before Trump takes office. Major Second Amendment groups, such as the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the industry&rsquo;s representative, are offering the names of ATF directors they would prefer.<\/p>\n<p>NSSF has been urging the incoming administration to reform and rein in ATF.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;ATF needs leadership that is dedicated to performing the mission without political prejudice. The firearm industry wants to be a productive partner with the ATF.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/realsolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">it partners with ATF<\/a> for gun sales programs.<\/p>\n<p>But Burlison noted that the agency has also been involved in multiple scandals, such as trading with Mexican cartels in Operation Fast and Furious and the Waco and Ruby Ridge crises.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEE THE LATEST POLITICAL NEWS AND BUZZ FROM WASHINGTON SECRETS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He hopes that the legislation, offered in the past in the House by former Rep.
