Some of these roles pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. While union leadership has splurged on handsome salaries for their family members, and political expenditures intended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/indus?ind=P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">boost<\/a> the Democratic Party, private union membership has continued its downward trend in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is not even a trend, it&rsquo;s an ongoing scandal,&rdquo; National Right to Work President Mark Mix told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;There are reports going back to the early days of labor unions about this type of nepotism.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among the unions with family employment conflicts of interest identified by the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>&rsquo;s review were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nalc.org\/government-affairs\/legislative-activities\/document\/2023-fact-sheets.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">National Association of Letter Carriers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufcw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">United Food And Commercial Workers International Union<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibew.org\/who-we-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goiam.org\/about\/#:~:text=With%20nearly%20600%2C000%20active%20and,labor%20unions%20in%20North%20America.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Association of Machinists<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carpenters.org\/about-ubc\/#:~:text=The%20United%20Brotherhood%20of%20Carpenters,generation%20of%20skilled%20construction%20professionals.\">United Brotherhood of Carpenters &amp; Joiners<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liuna.org\/liuna-structure#:~:text=Through%20the%20years%2C%20LIUNA%20has,44%20District%20Councils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Laborers International Union of North America<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iuoe.org\/about-iuoe#:~:text=Founded%20in%201896%2C%20IUOE%20today,the%20United%20States%20and%20Canada.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Union of Operating Engineers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/boilermakers.org\/about#:~:text=The%20International%20Brotherhood%20of%20Boilermakers,%2C%20mining%2C%20and%20related%20industries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Brotherhood of Boilermakers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcunion.org\/about-tcu\/#:~:text=The%20Transportation%20Communications%20Union%2FIAM,employed%20in%20the%20railroad%20industry.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Transportation Communications Union<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/iatse.net\/about\/#:~:text=We%20are%20more%20than%20168%2C000,inside%20and%20outside%20the%20workplace.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Alliance Theatrical Stage Employees<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/iuec-international-union-of-elevator-constructors#:~:text=About%20us,you%20to%20this%20LinkedIn%20page.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Union of Elevator Constructors<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/opcmia132.com\/4-questions-to-ask-a-plasterer-and-cement-masons-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Operative Plasterers &amp; Cement Masons International Association<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ilaunion.org\/#:~:text=Welcome%20to%20the%20ILA&amp;text=The%20ILA-,The%20International%20Longshoremen's%20Association%20is%20the%20largest%20union%20of%20maritime,Eastern%20Canada%2C%20and%20the%20Bahamas.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">International Longshoremen&rsquo;s Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, these unions claim to represent more than 4.8 million workers and contribute tens of millions of dollars to electing Democrats each election cycle. The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>also identified several local union branches with family employment-related conflicts of interest. These local labor organizations all had at least $15 million in revenue and, together, represented hundreds of thousands more workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over $11 million in union funds flowed to relatives of these organizations&rsquo; leaders in 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-smith-corporate-partners-spotify-lyft-paramount-adidas-obama-foundation-remain-silent-following-oscars-attack\/\" title=\"Will Smith Corporate Partners, Spotify, Lyft, Paramount, Adidas, Obama Foundation Remain Silent Following Oscars Attack\">tax documents show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Laborers International Union of North America was among the most prolific labor organizations in terms of the raw number of family members its leadership employed with cushy jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The union, primarily representing workers in the construction, energy, and public service industries, employed more than a dozen people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-face-trump-turning-effectively-bankrupt-rnc-into-legal-fund-for-indicted-front-runner\/\" title=\"Trump&#039;s financial troubles may force Republicans to use the RNC as a legal fund for their indicted front-runner\">high-level roles<\/a> with family ties to union leadership. Terence O&rsquo;Sullivan, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liuna.org\/news\/story\/liuna-general-president-terry-osullivan-and-general-secretary-treasurer-armand-e-sabitoni-announce-their-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">led<\/a> the union as its general president between 2000 and 2023, employed four members of his family as of that year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yvette-pena-o-sullivan-0679427a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Yvette Pena-O&rsquo;Sullivan<\/a>, for instance, is a family member of the union president who has served as the executive director of the office of the general president since 2013. Yvette O&rsquo;Sullivan brought home a salary of nearly $300,000 in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/o-sullivan-kevin-64a36a24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kevin O&rsquo;Sullivan<\/a> earned a salary of $258,000 in 2023 as the director of the union&rsquo;s education department, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liunamidatlantic.org\/the-liuna-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Brendan O&rsquo;Sullivan<\/a> took in $291,000 for his work as an international representative and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/caitlin-o-sullivan-42b760a1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Caitlin O&rsquo;Sullivan<\/a> made about $95,000 as a special projects coordinator. O&rsquo;Sullivan&rsquo;s family members held their roles for years under his leadership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>President O&rsquo;Sullivan wasn&rsquo;t the only leader at the Laborers International Union Of North America to have family members employed on the organization&rsquo;s dime. Secretary-treasurer Armand Sabitoni as well as vice presidents Terrence Healy, Robert Richardson, Raymond Pocino, Stephen Farner, Oscar De La Torre, Joseph Mancinelli, Rocco Davis, and Robert Abbott.<\/p>\n<p>Salaries for the vice presidents themselves range between $277,000 and roughly $600,000 per year. The union&rsquo;s president, meanwhile, made over $1.2 million during his final year occupying the role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Like many employers &mdash; whether they are publicly traded on Wall Street like Tesla, political organizations such as the RNC and the DNC, or privately held firms like the Trump Organization &mdash; we strive to retain the most qualified talent, some of whom are referred internally,&rdquo; a Laborers International Union of North America spokesperson told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;Skills and performance are the measure of success at LIUNA.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brent Booker, president of the Laborers&rsquo; International Union of North America, speaks at a Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris campaign event at Northwestern High School in Detroit, Monday, Sept. 2, 2024. (AP Photo\/Paul Sancya)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;As these generational &lsquo;leadership&rsquo; clans and cliques progress, you find that many of these executives and officers have never even been on a job site &mdash; that&rsquo;s one of the things that happens with nepotism,&rdquo; Mix continued. &ldquo;The disconnect is growing wider and wider &hellip; not only just representing and understanding what the rank-and-file workers are dealing with day in and day out but with political ideology as well.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Many unions engaged in what Mix describes as nepotistic leadership practices also shift millions of dollars to the Democratic Party each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The International Association of Machinists, for instance, directed more than 98.6% of its political contributions to Democratic-aligned committees during the 2024 election cycle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/machinists-aerospace-workers-union\/summary?id=D000000078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according<\/a> to data compiled by OpenSecrets. Most of the other unions identified by the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>&rsquo;s analysis had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/indus?ind=P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">similar<\/a> partisan breakdowns in their political giving.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While bankrolling Democrats, the bosses of the machinists union were also handing off generous paychecks to members of their families. Robert Martinez, the union&rsquo;s international president, paid his son and daughter six-figure salaries in 2023. The union has also historically provided the children of its general vice presidents with six-figure compensation.<\/p>\n<p>American workers have increasingly turned away from private unions. Just 6% of private-sector workers were unionized as of 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/union2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according<\/a> to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This represents a steep decline from a private unionization rate of 16.8% in 1983, the first year for which complete data is available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Anytime we concede the working men and women of America to union officials, we&rsquo;re making a mistake,&rdquo; Mix continued. &ldquo;The fact that labor unions get the privilege to claim America&rsquo;s working people is just flat-out wrong. When you look [at] union hierarchies and you find this nepotism, this corruption, and you find this complete disconnect with the political views of most rank-and-file union members, you know that something is off. And what&rsquo;s off is federal law that gives union leaders these dramatic powers over workers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Despite bleeding members, unions like the United Brotherhood of Carpenters &amp; Joiners of America have continued the trend of diverting resources to individuals connected to union leadership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In its 2023 tax filings, the carpenters union disclosed that it was paying the son and brother of executive committee member Thomas Ryan Jr. well over $200,000 per year each. The sons of the union&rsquo;s treasurer and another executive committee member also pulled in north of $200,000 working high-ranking jobs in the union.
