Representatives-elect are the only individuals qualified to vote in the election of a speaker.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Plaskett countered, &ldquo;This body and this nation has a territories and a colonies problem. What was supposed to be temporary has now effectively become permanent.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s worth noting that the delegate was actually born and raised <a href=\"https:\/\/bioguide.congress.gov\/search\/bio\/P000610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in New York City<\/a>, where she went on to serve as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/calif-da-blasts-gov-newsom-for-not-stopping-release-of-convicted-killer\/\" title=\"Calif. DA blasts Gov. Newsom for not stopping release of convicted killer\">assistant district attorney<\/a>. Plaskett later moved to D.C. to become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/analysis-sheldon-whitehouse-senior-staff-as-white-as-his-private-beach-club\/\" title=\"ANALYSIS: Sheldon Whitehouse Senior Staff as White as His Private Beach Club\">congressional staff member<\/a>. She could have run for Congress in New York and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">enjoyed full voting rights<\/a> if elected.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2014, Plaskett ran for and was elected delegate for the Virgin Islands, the birthplace of her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/african-american-history\/stacey-e-plaskett-1966\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parents<\/a>, who had met and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtjx.org\/blogs\/local-news\/congresswoman-plaskett-on-the-passing-of-her-father-leroy-plaskett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">married<\/a> in New York after moving to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Plaskett&rsquo;s microphone was eventually cut off as she continued to try to make her case about the injustice of territorial delegates not being allowed to vote in the speaker&rsquo;s election.<\/p>\n<p>Soon the mic was briefly turned back on, as she proclaimed, &ldquo;I have a voice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">US Virgin Islands Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D) causes a scene on the House floor after she is told delegates can&rsquo;t vote for Speaker: &ldquo;This body and this nation has a territories and a colonies problem.
