sharply early Friday morning after Surgeon General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/vivek-murthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Vivek Murthy\">Vivek Murthy<\/a> issued a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3275303\/surgeon-general-calls-for-cancer-warning-labels-on-alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"advisory report\">advisory report<\/a> calling for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Congress\">Congress<\/a> to enact legislation to add a cancer risk warning label on all alcohol products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>According to the new report, alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, behind tobacco use and obesity, but nearly three-quarters of Americans are unaware that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">increased alcohol consumption raises cancer risk<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report generated concern among investors, indicated by the drop in stock prices at the market opening just two hours after the report was published.<\/p>\n<p>As of 10:30 a.m. EST, one hour after the market opening, stock prices for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/bf.b?mod=refsymb_mw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Brown-Forman Corp.\">Brown-Forman<\/a>, makers of Jack Daniel&rsquo;s whiskey, fell by more than 1%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/bud?mod=refsymb_mw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Anheuser-Busch\">Anheuser-Busch<\/a> fell by 2.25%, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/sam?mod=refsymb_mw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Boston Beer Co.,\">Boston Beer Company<\/a>, brewer of Sam Adams and Angry Orchard hard cider, was down by nearly 2.6%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/stz?mod=refsymb_mw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Constellation Brands,\">Constellation Brands<\/a>, distributors for Modelo and Corona beers, Casa Noble tequila, and Mondavi wines, fell by approximately 1.25% one hour after the market opening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Murthy said when announcing the report that alcohol was a factor in 20,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year, about 6,500 more deaths than alcohol-related traffic fatalities annually.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Worldwide, an estimated 741,300 cancer cases were associated with alcohol consumption in 2020, nearly 1 in 4 of which were related to consuming fewer than two drinks per day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether Murthy&rsquo;s call for warning labels will be heeded remains to be seen, as several Republicans have accused public health authorities of overreach on alcohol guidance, including Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3145871\/house-republicans-press-agencies-health-effects-alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"James Comer\">James Comer<\/a> (R-KY) and Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ted-cruz-rails-against-beer-limit-guideline-that-doesnt-exist-1823576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"James Comer\">Ted
