(AP Photo\/Evan Vucci)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier this week, Trump&rsquo;s soon-to-be White House communications director slammed the continued &ldquo;Witch Hunts&rdquo; Trump faces despite the Republican Party winning back the presidency and both chambers of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We look forward to uniting our country in the new administration as President Trump makes America great again,&rdquo; Cheung said, referring to the incoming inauguration of Trump on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<p>Here&rsquo;s an update on the most prominent legal matters still looming over Trump:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hush Money Case<\/h2>\n<p>Trump was convicted in New York for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3018093\/trump-guilty-in-manhattan-hush-money-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">falsifying business records<\/a> tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-rejects-trump-bid-to-shield-financial-records\/\" title=\"Supreme Court Rejects Trump Bid To Shield Financial Records\">hush money payments<\/a> to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. He has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty. <\/p>\n<p>While his sentencing was delayed following a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3030301\/supreme-court-finds-some-immunity-for-presidents-complicating-trump-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Trump v. United States<\/a> <\/em>on July 1, Trump&rsquo;s attorneys have argued the case should be dismissed entirely.<\/p>\n<p>So far, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, who presided over his trial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3262448\/judge-merchan-denies-trump-bid-throw-out-hush-money-conviction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">has only ruled that the immunity decision<\/a> has no bearing on whether the jury&rsquo;s guilty verdict should be tossed out.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has separately argued that his White House victory compels the dismissal of the jury&rsquo;s verdict and the case in its entirety. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) has pushed back, instead laying out alternatives such as freezing the proceedings during Trump&rsquo;s term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A decision on this aforementioned subject is still pending, leaving the case in limbo just days before Trump is set to reenter the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Georgia Election Interference<\/h2>\n<p>Fulton County District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fani-willis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fani Willis<\/a> charged Trump and 18 others with conspiring to overturn Georgia&rsquo;s 2020 election results. <\/p>\n<p>A state appeals court recently disqualified Willis from the case due to conflict-of-interest claims. <\/p>\n<p>Even if her appeal to regain control is successful, any trial would have to wait until Trump leaves office. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3272533\/georgia-attorney-general-against-fani-willis-bid-retake-trump-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">If her appeal fails<\/a>, the case will require a new prosecutor, further delaying proceedings, and raises questions about whether a secondary district attorney would be willing to continue the case launched by Willis&rsquo;s office.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A $500 million Civil Fraud Judgment<\/h2>\n<p>Trump faces a $500 million penalty after a New York judge ruled his business engaged in years of fraud.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyers attended an appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3167615\/trump-500-million-verdict-clear-cut-statute-limitations-violation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">hearing<\/a> of the decision in September, with some judges signaling the penalty may be excessive. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump&rsquo;s legal team has sought dismissal, arguing that the ongoing case could interfere with his presidential duties. <\/p>\n<p>New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) has refused to drop the case.<\/p>\n<p>The civil cases against Trump are particularly pressing, in part because the Supreme Court already found in a similar case involving former President Bill Clinton in 1997 that presidents <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/520\/681\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">can be held liable for civil damages<\/a> despite their status as president.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E. He is appealing both verdicts.<\/p>\n<p>The civil cases are one of the least threatening to his service as president and freedoms, but have struck a chord for Trump. He recently succeeded in getting ABC News to settle a defamation case for $15 million after anchor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3261020\/stephanopoulos-abc-news-ordered-to-apologize-pay-15-million-trump-defamation-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">George Stephanopoulos<\/a> claimed the jury found him liable for &ldquo;rape,&rdquo; and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/president-elect-donald-trump-hints-e-jean-carroll-could-be-next-legal-target-in-truth-social-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">reposted<\/a> a photo of Carroll on Truth Social with a message that read: &ldquo;Should a woman go to jail for falsely accusing a man of rape? Retruth if you want justice for Trump.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3272171\/appeals-court-upholds-verdict-finding-trump-liable-for-sexual-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">upheld<\/a> the $5 million verdict from the first case earlier this week, while arguments on the larger $83 million judgment are still ongoing. <\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s lawyers contend the immunity ruling should protect him from liability for statements made during his presidency.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Central Park Five Defamation Case<\/h2>\n<p>Members of the &ldquo;Exonerated Five&rdquo; have sued Trump for defamation over remarks made during a presidential debate in September.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit alleges that Trump defamed five men who were wrongfully convicted in 1989 in the assault of a New York jogger in Central Park during the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Shanin Specter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/09\/11\/nx-s1-5108632\/central-park-five-trump-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">told<\/a> NPR in October that Trump &ldquo;cast them in a harmful false light and intentionally inflicted emotional distress on them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump has moved to dismiss the case, arguing his statements were substantially true and protected political speech, while the five plaintiffs are asking the court to let the case proceed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jan. 6 Civil Suits<\/h2>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/were-looking-at-democrat-lawfare-legal-scholar-says-of-trump-cases-trial-schedule\/\" title=\"Legal scholar claims Trump cases and trial schedule are examples of &quot;Democrat lawfare.&quot;\">federal criminal case related<\/a> to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot has been dismissed, Trump still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/06\/us\/politics\/trump-jan-6-civil-cases.html&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjK27TUidiKAxWpMNAFHUNdJ7AQFnoECBsQAQ&amp;usg=AOvVaw0RY5ip6ak4LMFii_WWhVRl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">faces eight<\/a> civil lawsuits. <\/p>\n<p>The cases involve law enforcement and Democratic lawmakers seeking damages for injuries and other harms.
