Panagopoulos told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Ronald Reagan biographer Craig Shirley went further, contending that the country &ldquo;has never been united,&rdquo; even during the Revolutionary War, except for after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and the terrorist attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/9-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Sept. 11, 2001<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve never been united as a country, and so the fact that we&rsquo;re divided over flags at half-staff for Jimmy Carter and interrupting the Trump inaugural is to be expected,&rdquo; Shirley told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;People are going to find something to complain about.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who has criticized Carter&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">economic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/policy\/foreign-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">foreign<\/a> policies, did acknowledge the &ldquo;challenges&rdquo; Carter encountered as president &ldquo;came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for,&rdquo; Trump wrote on Truth Social. &ldquo;He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. Trump Posts From His Truth Social (@TrumpDailyPosts) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrumpDailyPosts\/status\/1873510478267519103?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/cdn-cgi\/scripts\/5c5dd728\/cloudflare-static\/email-decode.min.js\"><\/script><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Regardless of Trump&rsquo;s statement, critics of Carter, who for years have used Carter as a political cudgel against Biden given their similar presidential challenges of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">inflation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/middle-east\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Middle East<\/a>, even before Biden also became a one-term president, have underscored Carter&rsquo;s own criticism of incumbent commanders in chief. <\/p>\n<p>For example, Carter brokered a postpresidency peace deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/north-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">North Korean<\/a> dictator Kim Il Sung at former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bill-clinton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Bill Clinton<\/a>&lsquo;s direction but announced it on CNN without his approval to pressure him into accepting the terms. In addition, Carter wrote a book on the Middle East conflict called <em>Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid<\/em>, in which he argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Israel<\/a>&lsquo;s &ldquo;apartheid&rdquo; was worse than that of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He was a terrible president,&rdquo; Republican strategist Scott Jennings said on CNN. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why he lost in a landslide after his one term. And if it&rsquo;s possible, I think he was even a worse ex-president because of his meddling in U.S. foreign policy, because of his saddling up to dictators around the world, because of his vehement views, anti-Israel views. Bush<\/a> and Trump, but can be partly explained because of Carter&rsquo;s connection to issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republican-senators-slam-democrats-proposed-bank-account-monitoring\/\" title=\"Republican senators slam Democrats\u2019 proposed bank account monitoring\">including inflation<\/a>. Under Biden, inflation peaked in June 2022 when consumer prices were 9.1% higher than the year before, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-labor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>. Under Carter, the annualized inflation rate peaked at 14.6% in March and April 1980.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today is&nbsp;Jimmy&nbsp;Carter&rsquo;s&nbsp;100th&nbsp;birthday,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/speaker-of-the-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">House Speaker<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mike Johnson<\/a> spokesman Bobby LaValley<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>wrote in an email to reporters in October. &ldquo;Both&nbsp;Carter&nbsp;and&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;have presided over struggling economies, high inflation, and major foreign policy failures. Does the&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;administration acknowledge concerns that history is repeating itself under their leadership?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Plummeting&nbsp;confidence&nbsp;in the economy, the most&nbsp;unpopular&nbsp;president in modern history,&nbsp;soaring inflation, and a&nbsp;looming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/recession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">recession<\/a>,&rdquo; then-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Republican National Committee<\/a> spokesman Tommy Pigott added in a separate email in July 2022. &ldquo;If you aren&rsquo;t having&nbsp;Jimmy&nbsp;Carter&nbsp;d&eacute;j&agrave; vu, you should be.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>To that end, Biden&rsquo;s approval rating never reached the depth of Carter&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/harris-tries-to-chip-away-at-her-disapproval-rating-in-preparation-for-november\/\" title=\"Harris works on improving her disapproval rating before November\">lowest average approval<\/a> of 29%, which Carter recorded on day 894 of his presidency amid rising inflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/interest-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">interest<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/unemployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">unemployment<\/a> rates and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">energy<\/a> crisis, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/biden-approval-rating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><em>FiveThirtyEight<\/em><\/a>. Biden&rsquo;s lowest average approval was 36.9% this summer, shortly after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">debate<\/a> against Trump, which preceded him stepping down as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">2024 Democratic nominee<\/a>, according to the same polling aggregator.<\/p>\n<p>Biden was also criticized last weekend when he proclaimed Jan. 9, 2025, a National Day of Mourning for Carter, ordering the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/news\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">White House<\/a>, federal buildings and grounds, and military posts and naval stations for the next 30 days, in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Joe Biden has declared January 9th, 2025 to be a National Day of Mourning for the passing of President Jimmy Carter,&rdquo; conservative activist Laura Loomer wrote on X. &ldquo;He also ordered the U.S. flag to be flown at half staff for 30 days, which means it will be at half staff during the Inauguration of President Trump.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#128680;Joe Biden has declared January 9th, 2025 to be a National Day of Mourning for the passing of President Jimmy Carter.
