His total was higher than Clinton&rsquo;s in 2016, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/2016\/results\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">65.9 million<\/a> and Harris&rsquo;s in 2024 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/11\/05\/us\/elections\/results-president.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">75 million<\/a>. Trump won in November with 77.3 million votes.<\/p>\n<p>Election rules were different in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, with some states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/voting-absentee-michigan-how-vote-mail-what-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like Michigan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiarecorder.com\/2023\/10\/09\/states-that-send-a-mail-ballot-to-every-voter-really-do-increase-turnout-scholars-find\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a> sending mail-in ballot applications to every registered voter on the rolls.<\/p>\n<p>Working against Biden&rsquo;s belief that he could have won in November was how he polled against Trump in 2020 versus 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Real Clear Polling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2020\/trump-vs-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average in 2020<\/a> showed Biden up throughout the year leading up to the election by about four percentage points or greater.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was Trump that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/trump-vs-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ahead this past year<\/a>, though not by as great a margin. When Biden withdrew in July, the distance between them was about three percentage points.
