Jeff Jackson (D-NC) resigned from the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-of-representatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">House<\/a> on Tuesday as he prepares to take the oath of office as <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">North Carolina<\/a>&lsquo;s next attorney general on New Year&rsquo;s Day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Jackson said in a statement it was the &ldquo;honor of a lifetime&rdquo; to serve as the first representative in North Carolina&rsquo;s 14th District after redistricting. He held the seat for one term after serving eight years in the state Senate.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It has never been lost on me that the privilege of serving in Congress was granted by the people I represent &mdash; people who trusted me to listen to them, speak for them, and conduct myself with integrity,&rdquo; said Jackson. &ldquo;Now, I&rsquo;m ready to serve the whole state and be their shield as Attorney General.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson defeated fellow Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) in an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">expensive general election<\/a> on Nov. 5. The incoming attorney general, who is an Afghan war veteran and National Guard attorney, will succeed Gov.-elect Josh Stein (D-NC), who held the attorney general position for two terms.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans picked up Jackson&rsquo;s seat in the 2024 election, with Rep.-elect Tim Moore (R-NC) preparing to be sworn in to the 119th Congress on Friday along with his fellow new members.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3252920\/republicans-turn-next-year-governor-battle-party-2024-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>REPUBLICANS TURN TO 2025 GOVERNOR BATTLES AS PARTY LOOKS TO RIDE 2024 SUCCESS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The GOP will gain a trifecta come Jan. 20, 2025, with President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s inauguration and Republicans holding 219 seats to Democrats&rsquo; 215 in the House. With such a narrow majority, eyes are on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and GOP leadership to see whether they can enact Trump&rsquo;s agenda as promised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3271175\/how-gop-infighting-over-speaker-fight-could-delay-trump-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">without the levels of infighting<\/a> that plagued them over the last year.<\/p>\n<p>With swearing-in on Jan. 3, the House is also scheduled to elect a speaker.
