This eerie footage was shared on the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre’s Instagram on September 30, featuring scientists exploring the Tonga Trench in the Pacific Ocean—the second-deepest trench globally—when they encountered a bizarre creature. The large animal was seen consuming bait fish placed in front of the camera.

While this oceanic creature may seem otherworldly, it has been identified as a Pacific sleeper shark by researchers. They described these sharks as “slow-moving giants” that inhabit cold, dark ocean depths and are well-adapted to endure extreme pressure and low temperatures. Their diet includes various marine life such as fish, squid, octopus, crabs, and prawns. The average size of an adult Pacific sleeper shark is around 3.6 meters.

Although not as fearsome as the shark from “Jaws,” its appearance can still be unsettling for many people—especially those who are already apprehensive about deep waters; however, there have been no reports linking this species to attacks on humans.

The Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre had previously explored the Tonga Trench during dives conducted between 2018 and 2019 when scientists reached the deepest points in all five oceans and discovered an unusual shrimp-like crustacean known as Bathycallisoma schellenbergi. This tiny creature became an unofficial mascot for their expedition due to its frequent sightings across different trenches.

Professor Alan Jamieson noted that it was surprising to find similar species across various trenches since they were traditionally thought to be isolated ecosystems with unique fauna—comparable to finding identical butterfly species in diverse mountain ranges like Rockies or Himalayas.

Evidence suggesting interbreeding between at least two trenches indicates that this small creature might have traversed open ocean waters despite previous assumptions about isolation among these deep-sea environments.
