Documents released by congressional investigators indicated that Cheney communicated with key witness Cassidy Hutchinson using \u2062the encrypted Signal app,\u2062 circumventing Hutchinson&#8217;s attorney. as vice chair of the illegally established and since disbanded Select Committee on Jan. 6. <\/p>\n<p>Previous documents <a href=\"https:\/\/cha.house.gov\/2024\/10\/new-texts-reveal-liz-cheney-communicated-with-cassidy-hutchinson-about-her-select-committee-testimony-without-hutchinson-s-attorney-s-knowledge-despite-cheney-knowing-it-was-unethical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a> by congressional investigators reviewing the Jan. 6 panel&rsquo;s work revealed Cheney coordinated with the Select Committee&rsquo;s star witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, using the encrypted Signal app. The pair communicated to circumvent Hutchinson&rsquo;s own attorney, Stefan Passantino, whom the Jan. 6 Committee ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/27\/cnn-wont-explain-why-it-omitted-exculpatory-evidence-from-hit-piece-on-trump-attorney-who-advised-cassidy-hutchinson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targeted<\/a> with an operation intended to strip him of his law license. Passantino was cleared of any misconduct following multiple investigations from ethics watchdogs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-554474153\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the House interim <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/17\/house-republicans-expose-j6-committees-lies-cover-ups-scandals-in-new-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> released on Tuesday, GOP lawmakers led by Barry Loudermilk of Georgia cited Cheney&rsquo;s communication with Hutchinson as a basis for referring the former congresswoman for a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">criminal investigation run<\/a> by the Justice Department.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Evidence uncovered by the Subcommittee revealed that former Congresswoman Liz Cheney tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson&rsquo;s attorney&rsquo;s knowledge,&rdquo; the House report read. &ldquo;This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/teachers-compile-list-of-parents-who-question-racial-curriculum-plot-war-on-them\/\" title=\"Teachers Compile List Of Parents Who Question Racial Curriculum, Plot War On Them\">secret communication<\/a> with a witness is improper and likely violates 18 U.S.C. 1512. Such action is outside the due functioning of the legislative process and therefore not protected by the Speech and Debate clause.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>House investigators also demanded that the FBI launch a probe into Cheney for &ldquo;procuring another person to commit perjury&rdquo; based on Hutchinson&rsquo;s sudden change in testimony following a change in legal counsel. Hutchinson terminated Passantino as her attorney just before appearing before the Jan. 6 Committee in a sensationalized television hearing where the ex-White House aide delivered her most outlandish claims related to former President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p>Hutchinson went from a benign fact-witness without much to offer Jan. 6 investigators to claiming Trump had attempted to violently hijack the presidential limousine in order to drive himself to the Capitol and even agreed with demonstrators who chanted &ldquo;hang Mike Pence&rdquo; as the riot unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is noteworthy that the drastic change in Hutchinson&rsquo;s story occurred after Representative Cheney directed Hutchinson to fire her attorney and hire counsel that Representative Cheney suggested,&rdquo; Loudermilk&rsquo;s report read. &ldquo;Hutchinson did not think this incident was worth mentioning during the first two interviews, nor in conversation with her attorney, nor in conversation with her closest friends.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While Hutchinson&rsquo;s sources immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/30\/if-the-jan-6-committee-is-into-investigating-unbelievable-stories-it-should-probe-trumps-gorilla-channel-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contradicted<\/a> her from the moment she stepped down from her public House hearing more than two years ago, Loudermilk&rsquo;s report further undermined her hysterical testimony with eight major findings.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is no evidence that President Trump agreed with rioters chanting &lsquo;hang Mike Pence,&rsquo;&rdquo; the report concluded in &ldquo;finding 3.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Loudermilk&rsquo;s team also debunked claims Trump assaulted Secret Service agents and tried to drive to the Capitol. <\/p>\n<p>Cheney responded to the congressional referral to the Justice Department on Bluesky, a left-wing alternative to X.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Chairman Loudermilk&rsquo;s &lsquo;Interim Report&rsquo; intentionally disregards the truth and the Select Committee&rsquo;s tremendous weight of evidence, and instead fabricates lies and defamatory allegations in an attempt to cover up what Donald Trump did,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Their allegations do not reflect a review of the actual evidence, and are a malicious and cowardly assault on the truth.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"Y9lhkzNBGpZCgFdu6xQSD1qW38AHyj4OwoJLb7EIKnM5eXvUmTacstr\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#128680;Liz Cheney issues statement exclusively on Bluesky to Chairman Loudermilk&rsquo;s explosive allegations of wrongdoing. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uVEq9WgFiY\">pic.twitter.com\/uVEq9WgFiY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bluesky Libs (@BlueskyLibs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlueskyLibs\/status\/1869113147740836239?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Tristan Justice is a national correspondent for The Federalist and the co-author of &#8220;Fat and Unhappy: How &#8216;Body Positivity&#8217; Is Killing Us (and How to Save Yourself).&#8221; He has also written for The Washington Examiner and The Daily Signal.
