(@USAO_LosAngeles) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USAO_LosAngeles\/status\/1868747885447462934?\">December 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <script type=\"text\/javascript\"> \t\t\tif ( getCookie( \"ff_subbed\" ) ) { \t\t\t\tdocument.getElementById(\"stnvideo\").remove() \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>As bad as bank robbery is, &ldquo;compassionate&rdquo; release in this case could have gotten somebody killed.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/inglewood-man-guilty-same-crime-after-compassionate-release\/3584147\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KNBC-TV<\/a>, Bond approached a Brinks driver outside a Chase Bank in August 2023 while armed with a handgun and demanded money.<\/p>\n<p>After the panicked driver dropped a duffel bag full of cash, Bond made off with $145,000, KNBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested at his home on Nov. 22, 2023, according to the station.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-cdca\/pr\/convicted-felon-found-guilty-armed-robbery-armored-vehicle-courier-gunpoint-while\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a>, Bond had been granted &ldquo;compassionate release&rdquo; from a 46-year and 10-month prison sentence in January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>That meant he&rsquo;d served 26 years of what should have, in actuarial terms, been effectively a life term.<\/p>\n<p>And that meant he was free to menace the life of a fellow human being to steal a bank&rsquo;s money.<\/p>\n<p>The Post noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ussc.gov\/guidelines\/amendment\/799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/george-floyd-rioter-admits-he-set-pawnshop-ablaze-but-denies-killing-man-inside\/\" title=\"George Floyd Rioter Admits He Set Pawnshop Ablaze But Denies Killing Man Inside\">federal sentencing guidelines<\/a><\/a> allow for compassionate release in the case of &ldquo;extraordinary and compelling reason&rdquo; &mdash; such as ill health for the prisoner or significant family circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&rsquo;t clear what grounds justified the release of a career criminal whose record, according to the Justice Department news release, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/woman-sentenced-to-10-years-for-smuggling-gun-into-prison-hidden-in-her-vagina\/\" title=\"Woman Sentenced To 10 Years For Smuggling Gun Into Prison Hidden In her Vagina\">includes multiple felony convictions<\/a> for crimes like armed robbery, bank robbery &ldquo;use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It didn&rsquo;t take into sufficient account the potential threat to victims like a Brinks driver confronted by a man with a handgun &mdash; or of innocent bystanders who might be killed or wounded if an armed robbery turns into an active shooting situation.<\/p>\n<p>(That&rsquo;s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/23-year-old-airman-made-ultimate-sacrifice-attempt-stop-armed-robbery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known to happen<\/a> now and again.)<\/p>\n<p>It didn&rsquo;t take into sufficient account the idea that Bond might go out and commit what was essentially the same crime as the one he was sentenced for.<\/p>\n<p>No one expects prison officials to be mind readers or able to predict the future, but it&rsquo;s fairly evident that criminals are people who <em>commit crimes<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dallas-police-chief-furious-paroled-gunman-allegedly-kills-maternity-nurses-abhorrent-failure-criminal-justice-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">if they&rsquo;re free<\/a> to do it.
