President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Joe Biden<\/a> has not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/omb\/statements-of-administration-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">taken a stance<\/a> on the legislation so far, but it cleared the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Senate<\/a> unanimously last year.<\/p>\n<p>Under current law, convicted lawmakers can continue to receive pension payments as long as their case is making its way through the courts, a &ldquo;loophole&rdquo; the bill&rsquo;s sponsors said incentivizes lawmakers to drag out the appeals process.<\/p>\n<p>The No Corruption Act, introduced by Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Rick Scott (R-FL), cuts off those payments upon the initial finding of guilt, with the pension restored only if an appeals court overturns the conviction.<\/p>\n<p>A presidential pardon is not enough to restore a lawmaker&rsquo;s pension.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For too long, corrupt Washington politicians have been exploiting a loophole in the system to continue to collect taxpayer-funded pensions even after they have been convicted of felonies,&rdquo;&nbsp;Rosen said in a statement. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m proud to see that my bipartisan legislation with Senator Scott to protect taxpayers&rsquo; money by closing this loophole has passed the House of Representatives, and it&rsquo;s on its way to be signed into law.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We must never stop working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-democrats-h-r-1-is-a-power-grab-would-undermine-states-election-rules\/\" title=\"Republicans: Democrats\u2019 H.R. 1 Is a Power Grab, Would Undermine States\u2019 Election Rules\">hold elected officials accountable<\/a> and protect taxpayers&rsquo; hard-earned money,&rdquo; Scott added.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, though it applies only to lawmakers convicted after its enactment, gained traction amid a spate of corruption scandals in the most recent Congress.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sen. Ex-Rep. George Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft in August following his expulsion from the House.<\/p>\n<p>A third lawmaker, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), has yet to stand trial but is charged with accepting around $600,000 in bribes.
