The group, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3203207\/nonpartisan-supreme-court-watchdog-omitted-sonia-sotomayor-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">helped lead a campaign<\/a> criticizing Clarence Thomas and other Supreme Court justices for allegedly failing to disclose gifts and other items related to their finances, received just $175,400 in donations last year &mdash; spending to the tune of $221,000 and finishing with a deficit of almost $46,000.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Fix the Court paid a grossly excessive salary to Gabe Roth, thereby jeopardizing its tax-exempt status with the IRS,&rdquo; said Paul Kamenar, counsel to a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">conservative watchdog group called<\/a> the National Legal and Policy Center that is mulling filing an IRS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/charities-non-profits\/irs-complaint-process-tax-exempt-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">complaint<\/a>. Roth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2201699\/supreme-court-transparency-charity-director-panics-over-irs-donor-leak-i-just-fed-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">unwittingly leaked<\/a> Fix the Court&rsquo;s donors in 2023, declaring in an interview after the fact, &ldquo;My screwup this morning probably cost me my job.&rdquo; Then, tax experts said Fix the Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2570217\/supreme-court-ethics-group-likely-failed-to-disclose-lobbying-experts-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">likely failed to disclose lobbying<\/a> on judicial issues, leading to the group updating its financial disclosures and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2454740\/supreme-court-ethics-activist-admits-lobbying-disclosure-failure-i-have-been-corrected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Roth apologizing<\/a> on a podcast episode for the omission. <\/p>\n<p>In October, a <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> analysis found Fix the Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3203207\/nonpartisan-supreme-court-watchdog-omitted-sonia-sotomayor-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">omitted speaking engagements<\/a> by Supreme Court Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/sonia-sotomayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Sonia Sotomayor<\/a> from its travel tracker for justices, prompting Fix the Court to update its website.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2014, Fix the Court was formed as a project of the New Venture Fund, a key cog in the $1 billion Democratic-aligned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3257138\/arabella-advisors-dark-money-hammer-hope-communist-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Arabella Advisors<\/a> dark money network. The controversies involving Fix the Court have resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/646141\/supreme-court-transparency-group-hammered-by-judiciary-gop-over-irs-donor-blunder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Republicans decrying hypocrisy<\/a> since the group takes aim at the Supreme Court for its &ldquo;disdain for openness and transparency.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Fix the Court calls itself nonpartisan and, as a charity, is required to be so under federal law. Still, the group&rsquo;s ties to New Venture Fund and other left-wing grantmakers firmly align Fix the Court with the Left.<\/p>\n<p>Roth is a former vice president at SKDK, an influential consulting firm working on behalf of Democrats. Fix the Court&rsquo;s unpaid board members include Josh Cohen, a senior adviser to the Center for American Progress think tank, and Michelle Kuppersmith, the director of a progressive watchdog called Campaign for Accountability.<\/p>\n<p>Fix the Court closed the books for its last fiscal year with roughly $72,000 in assets, illustrating how the group may be walking on thin ice heading into 2025.
