law firm to defend Mayorkas amid impeachment<\/h1>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-title-line\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<div id=\"Brid_1910551\" class=\"tpd-featured-video bridtv\"><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-homeland-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Department of Homeland Security<\/a> hired 13 employees from a prestigious, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-backtracks-on-demand-for-trump-appointed-prosecutor-to-resign\/\" title=\"Biden Backtracks on Demand for Trump-Appointed Prosecutor to Resign\">private law firm<\/a> to defend Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/alejandro-mayorkas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Alejandro Mayorkas<\/a> as he faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/impeachment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">impeachment<\/a> proceedings in the House and Senate earlier this year, according to information obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>The DHS spent $1,625,815.26 in federal taxpayer money on more than a dozen private attorneys and staff at Debevoise and Plimpton, a self-described &ldquo;premiere&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/analysis-ukraine-war-rekindles-europes-demand-for-african-oil-and-gas\/\" title=\"Analysis: Ukraine war rekindles Europe\u2019s demand for African oil and gas\">global law firm<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nebraska-department-of-education-excluded-religious-groups-from-sex-ed-curriculum-team\/\" title=\"Nebraska Department of Education Excluded Religious Groups From Sex Ed Curriculum Team\">internal emails obtained<\/a> through the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank&rsquo;s oversight project.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s obscene that Mayorkas spent taxpayer dollars to hire a fancy law firm to represent himself in his impeachment,&rdquo; Mike Howell, executive director of the oversight project at the Heritage Foundation, said in a statement Friday. &ldquo;These records show just how elaborate his defense actually was, all paid for by the people of the country he ordered invaded.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The document named only one of the 13: counselor Carter Burwell, a former top lawyer on the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee. The other 12 staff hired include associates, a senior information security engineer, a partner, a head of global information security, and a senior litigation case manager.<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans narrowly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2853744\/alejandro-mayorkas-impeached\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">impeached<\/a> Mayorkas in February. Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2790914\/mtg-details-the-case-against-mayorkas-in-first-impeachment-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">brought<\/a>&nbsp;the impeachment charges against Mayorkas, which were drawn up by the House Homeland Security Committee. Mayorkas was impeached on two counts: willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and&nbsp;a breach of the public trust related to his handling of the border crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The new documents obtained by the Washington-based Heritage Foundation show the staff that was hired at Debevoise and Plimpton. It was previously <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.heritage.org\/Mayorkas%20Impeachment%20FOIA%20Documents.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"revealed\">revealed<\/a> by the conservative think tank in March that the outside firm was hired.<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas and the DHS did not violate any law by hiring external legal support during the House impeachment proceedings. The Democrat-controlled Senate decided not to hold a trial.
