Ellen Read said.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday on Facebook, Concord city officials made it clear that they felt bullied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/satanic-temple-vows-raise-florida-desantis-school-chaplain-law-goes-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Satanic Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Throughout the country, the Satanic Temple has both threatened and brought lawsuits under the First Amendment when excluded,&rdquo; the City of Concord wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, &ldquo;[u]nder the First Amendment and to avoid litigation,&rdquo; the city decided to allow all holiday displays.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCityofConcordNH%2Fposts%2Fpfbid024xkDobAc45ft1iRAYYiYijhz53PRwP5sQ4pf2eiGanfUMJRTfATfTbr8VR9Gwo2l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"731\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To his credit, Concord Mayor Byron Champlin recognized The Satanic Temple&rsquo;s insidious motives and thus objected to the display.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I opposed the permit,&rdquo; Champlin told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/12\/10\/metro\/nh-satanic-temple-holiday-toppled-possible-vandalism\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20opposed%20the%20permit%20on,of%20year%2C%E2%80%9D%20Champlin%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Globe<\/a>, &ldquo;on the basis that the request was not made in the interest of promoting religious equity, but to drive an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">anti-religious political agenda leveraging<\/a> the attention one can receive during this time of year.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The statue and its diabolical message had &ldquo;cracks across the middle and chunks of text missing&rdquo; within 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>We may thank the heroic vandal for that.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, public officials need to learn that the First Amendment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/1st-amendment-protects-religion-not-satanism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">does not protect<\/a> satanism. It has nothing to do with Baphomet statues.<\/p>\n<p>This same issue arose during the 2023 holiday season, when The Satanic Temple placed a similar display inside the Iowa Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as now, state officials assumed that the First Amendment required equal protection for such displays. Then, as now, they erred in that assumption.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governour of the Universe,&rdquo; James Madison, author of the First Amendment, wrote in 1785.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, according to President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/heroes-american-history-conspiracy-theorists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Adams<\/a>, one cannot read the U.S. Constitution in purely secular terms.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other,&rdquo; Adams wrote in 1798.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the Constitution protects anti-religious speech, but it does not &mdash; indeed, it cannot &mdash; require equal protection for religion and satanism.
