Smirnov&rsquo;s indictment, at the time, served as a massive blow to House Republicans, who used Smirnov&rsquo;s claims about the Bidens to help justify their impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Smirnov had reported to the FBI in June 2020 that Mykola Zlochevsky, the founder of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, paid Joe and Hunter Biden each $5 million while Joe Biden was vice president. The payments, Smirnov falsely claimed, were made in exchange for Joe Biden to use his political power to fire a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating Burisma.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3222249\/how-kamala-harris-plowed-through-1-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>HOW KAMALA HARRIS PLOWED THROUGH $1 BILLION<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fabricated story was convincing because Hunter Biden held a lucrative board position with Burisma, meaning that if Joe Biden deterred investigations into Burisma, it could benefit his son.<\/p>\n<p>Smirnov admitted lying about the claims, which he made on an FBI form known as an FD-1023 in 2020 while Joe Biden was running for president. In his plea agreement, Smirnov also admitted that he had been in contact with Russian intelligence officials.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) made a redacted version of the FD-1023 public last year, leading Republicans to wield the wild allegations in the media.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>House Oversight Committee Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/james-comer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">James Comer<\/a> (R-KY) called Smirnov, whose identity was not known at the time, &ldquo;highly credible&rdquo; as he led the House&rsquo;s impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Smirnov has been detained in California since his indictment and is set to be sentenced by early January.
