Its purpose was to extend citizenship to people newly freed from slavery, whose status was left in question after the infamous case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-dont-cheer-yet-leaked-scotus-opinion-may-remembered-alongside-roe-casey-dred-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dred Scott v.
