Although this vote does not ensure\u200b the bill will become law, it continues the legislative process, presenting an \u2062opportunity for lawmakers to ultimately reject\u200b it, especially considering a similar proposal was overwhelmingly rejected nine years ago. The bill&#8217;s sponsor,Labor MP Kim Leadbeater,asserted that \u2062the legislation offers the world&#8217;s strongest \u2064safeguards; however,critics,including Archbishop of\u200c Canterbury Justin welby,have raised concerns about its implications.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ckgzkp79npgo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision by<\/a>&nbsp;the United Kingdom&rsquo;s Parliament to give a preliminary go-ahead for an assisted suicide regime in England and Wales represents a heartbreaking tragedy on two levels. It reinforces how our modern culture has devalued human life and exemplifies how <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">government-run health care systems<\/a> have accelerated this devaluation.<\/p>\n<p>The recent vote does not guarantee the measure will be enacted into law; it merely continues the legislative process, and lawmakers can &mdash; and should &mdash; reject it during subsequent stages. But it comes nine years after the same Parliament, by a nearly three-to-one margin,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2015\/sep\/11\/mps-begin-debate-assisted-dying-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected any<\/a>&nbsp;changes to the law on assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p>During the debate, the bill&rsquo;s sponsor, Labour MP Kim Leadbeater,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ckgzkp79npgo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed that<\/a>&nbsp;the legislation contained &ldquo;the most robust and strongest set of safeguards and protections in the world.&rdquo; But in October, Justin Welby, who as Archbishop of Canterbury heads the Church of England, rightly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn9dn42xqg4o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">observed<\/a>&nbsp;that passing any legislation permitting assisted suicide &ldquo;opens the way to it broadening out, such that people who are not in that situation [i.e., terminally ill] asking for this, or feeling pressured to ask for it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, that is exactly what has happened in other countries. Canada has vastly expanded its assisted suicide regime, loosening criteria to allow for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardus.ca\/research\/health\/reports\/from-exceptional-to-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">same-day<\/a>&nbsp;suicide and expanding the number of conditions that qualify. As a result, the number of assisted suicides in Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1189529\/total-reported-number-medically-assisted-deaths-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rose<\/a> by at least 13-fold from 2016 to 2022, and now numbers over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/publications\/health-system-services\/annual-report-medical-assistance-dying-2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13,000<\/a> per year.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond a move toward assisted suicide, Canada shares something else in common with Great Britain: a single-payer system of socialized medicine. Canadians have documented&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/welcome-to-canada-the-doctor-will-kill-you-now-maid-euthanasia-foley-29ce77e0?mod=opinion_lead_pos7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cases in<\/a>&nbsp;which the health care bureaucracy has <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/canada-maid-medical-aid-in-dying-consent-doctors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encouraged<\/a> individuals to commit assisted suicide, presumably because such &ldquo;resolutions&rdquo; are far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/189\/3\/E101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cheaper<\/a> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sally-c-pipes-health-care-is-not-a-right-no-matter-what-the-left-says\/\" title=\"Sally C. Pipes: Health Care Is Not a Right, No Matter What the Left Says\">government-run health system<\/a> than treating patients&rsquo; underlying conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom faces similar fiscal pressures, as the new Labour government has already announced massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-budget-2024-keir-starmer-labour-tax-rises-living-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax increases<\/a> to fund the country&rsquo;s National Health Service. Time will tell if this additional funding can prevent the perennial &ldquo;winter crisis&rdquo; that hits the NHS practically every year. But when Archbishop Welby&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn9dn42xqg4o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said he<\/a>&nbsp;&ldquo;worried people would feel compelled to ask to die if they felt like a burden,&rdquo; according to the BBC, he had every right to sound this concern.<\/p>\n<p>As a disability advocate and former member of the National Council on Disability, I worry that this spreading &ldquo;culture of death&rdquo; could ultimately affect my daughter who has cystic fibrosis. I value every human life, from conception to natural death, and find&nbsp;the way in which our modern culture views people as disposable as appalling as it is tragic.<\/p>\n<p>The most vulnerable in our society &mdash; those&nbsp;who have no one to speak for them &mdash; are most at risk in this brave new world. We must reinforce the message that vulnerable people are valuable people and make a commitment to provide them with the health care and mental and psychological support they need, such that they never feel pressured to take their own lives.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that members of Parliament will come to their senses and reject the assisted suicide measure before it makes it onto the statute books.
