Opposing forces entered the city around dawn, \u200dleading\u200c to scenes of jubilation in which crowds vandalized symbols of the regime,\u200d such as \u2063defacing Assad portraits and toppling statues. Footage emerged of \u2064celebratory gunfire \u2062and\u2062 citizens raiding government buildings, including\u2062 the Syrian Central\u200b Bank and Assad&#8217;s residences, with reports of looting rampant.<\/p>\n<p>While\u200d many Syrians celebrated the rebel success, chaos ensued at Damascus International Airport as thousands attempted to flee, panicking after airport staff vanished. Military and security officials reportedly escaped via the airport prior to its capture\u2063 by rebel forces.<\/p>\n<p>State-run Syrian television \u200cwas \u2063taken\u2062 over by the opposition, which\u2063 broadcast messages announcing the regime&#8217;s overthrow and the release of political prisoners. The new government&#8217;s\u2062 Prime Minister expressed a willingness to negotiate a peaceful transition of power, while statements from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schiff-nadler-call-flynn-pardon-abuse-of-power\/\" title=\"Schiff, Nadler Call Flynn Pardon &#039;Abuse of Power&#039;\">government officials<\/a> indicated a shift towards cooperation with the new rebel leadership. Videos showed citizens tearing down a large poster of the assassinated former Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps leader Qassem Soleimani and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. It was evacuated ahead of the rebel advance.<\/p>\n<p>The government began a peaceful transition on Sunday, with Assad&rsquo;s Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali announcing in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sentdefender\/status\/1865605235059613855?s=46&amp;t=QImh_XVez_-AE3fI8sAeww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video statement&nbsp;<\/a>that he hadn&rsquo;t left the country and expressed willingness to &ldquo;cooperate&rdquo; with the rebel leadership. He was seen on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Zlatti_71\/status\/1865666197330792548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"video\">video<\/a> being guided by opposition fighters to negotiate the transfer of power. Hayat Tahrir al Sham directed its fighters not to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kazakhstan-chaos-reports-of-riots-beheadings-as-russia-sends-troops\/\" title=\"Kazakhstan Chaos: Reports of Riots, Beheadings as Russia Sends Troops\">attack government buildings<\/a> while the transition was underway.<\/p>\n<p>Syrian government bodies quickly reflected the change.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today, a new page is being written in the history of Syria, to inaugurate a national covenant and charter that unites the word of the Syrians, unites them and does not divide them, in order to build one homeland in which justice and equality prevail,&rdquo; a <a href=\"https:\/\/mofaex.gov.sy\/ar\/news2450\/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%84%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%8A%D9%86-%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%B9%D9%86-%D9%88%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AC%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%BA%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%A8%D9%8A%D9%86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"statement\">statement<\/a> from the country&rsquo;s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tensions-flare-between-china-india-after-clashes-at-himalayan-border\/\" title=\"Tensions flare between China, India after clashes at Himalayan border\">foreign ministry<\/a> said, adding that it would continue to work with foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>As of Sunday morning Eastern time, Assad&rsquo;s whereabouts remain unknown. He has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/syria-rebels-celebrate-captured-homs-set-sights-damascus-2024-12-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;left the country. Social media users tracking Assad&rsquo;s alleged plane noted that it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/warmonitors\/status\/1865591052683395292?s=46&amp;t=QImh_XVez_-AE3fI8sAeww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disappeared&nbsp;<\/a>from flight radar&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/no_itsmyturn\/status\/1865589274801737761?s=46&amp;t=QImh_XVez_-AE3fI8sAeww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">near<\/a>&nbsp;the city of Homs. Two Syrian security sources told <em>Reuters<\/em> that there&rsquo;s a &ldquo;very high probability&rdquo; he died in a plane crash.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian foreign ministry made no indication that he was dead or missing in its first statement following the fall of Damascus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a result of negotiations between B. Assad and a number of participants in the armed conflict on the territory of the [Syrian Arab Republic], he decided to leave the presidential post and left the country, giving instructions to transfer power peacefully,&rdquo; it <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/MID_Russia\/49342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"read\">read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Assad&rsquo;s fall was also notable as he was the last remaining Ba&rsquo;athist head of state, an ideology espousing the creation of a socialist pan-Arab state. It was previously one of the most prominent intellectual movements in the Arab world. His father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3250879\/syrian-anti-assad-rebels-take-crucial-city-hama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Hafez al-Assad<\/a>, ruled the country starting in 1971 until he died and his son soon after took over.<\/p>\n<p>The dramatic collapse of the Assad government happened over the course of just 12 days after HTS launched a surprise offensive on Nov. 27 out of Idlib. The Syrian Civil War had previously been stagnant for over four years, after a Russian-Turkish brokered ceasefire in March 2020. Assad was widely seen as having won the civil war, with regional actors bringing the former pariah back into the fold.<\/p>\n<p>The HTS-led offensive fully routed the SAA, setting off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3250879\/syrian-anti-assad-rebels-take-crucial-city-hama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"string of routes\">string of routes<\/a> of government forces. Assad&rsquo;s two primary allies that had bailed him out before, Russia and Iran, were distracted by conflicts with Ukraine and Israel, respectively. The government&rsquo;s collapse happened too quickly for either to send sufficient aid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The end of the Assad regime marks an uncertain new era for both Syria and the Middle East. While every major opposition faction celebrated its fall, Syria now finds itself ruled by over half a dozen major factions with irreconcilable goals. HTS, an outgrowth of Al Qaeda recognized as a terrorist group by the United States, is unlikely to win much-needed international support.
