Knife down right now, knife down right now,&rdquo; the deputy said.<\/p>\n<p>When Paul refused, Howes eventually shot him, and the woman screamed frantically.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies rendered first aid to Paul until EMS arrived, but he was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph&rsquo;s Hospital, according to HCSO.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This whole call, from 911 to the time of the shooting, was 20 minutes,&rdquo; said Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer. &ldquo;Twenty minutes of trying to de-escalate this situation, and then it resulted in a hostage situation. Our deputies reacted incredibly in this time.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Howes joined the HCSO in February.
