Ethical concerns surrounding the oversight of such practices continue to provoke debate in Canada, questioning the\u200d safety \u200dand regulation of assisted suicide in vulnerable \u200dpopulations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Dr. Ellen Wiebe does not heal her patients. Instead, she kills them.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor operates an abortion mill in Vancouver, called the Willow Clinic, where she also performs assisted suicides. In Canada, this practice of doctors killing their patients is called &ldquo;medical assistance in dying,&rdquo; or MAID.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She does abortions during the day, and then she goes out and provides euthanasia to sick old people,&rdquo; Angelina Ireland, executive director of the Canadian nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/deltahospicesociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delta Hospice Society<\/a>, told The Federalist. &ldquo;Some might consider her to be a massive serial killer.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Wiebe once operated a family practice but &ldquo;now restricts her practice to women&rsquo;s health and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingwithdignity.ca\/team-members\/dr-ellen-wiebe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assisted death<\/a>.&rdquo; She is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingwithdignity.ca\/team-members\/dr-ellen-wiebe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> research director<\/a> of the Canadian Association of MAID Assessors and Providers (CAMAP) &mdash; an organization supporting doctors who deliberately kill their patients &mdash; and sits on the clinicians advisory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingwithdignity.ca\/team-members\/dr-ellen-wiebe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">council<\/a> for the powerful pro-euthanasia lobby Dying With Dignity Canada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/cj-jp\/ad-am\/bk-di.html#:~:text=As%20the%20sections%20that%20prohibited,request%20medical%20assistance%20in%20dying.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legalized<\/a> MAID in 2016, revising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/health-official-slaps-fines-criminal-charges-against-church-elders-for-refusing-to-let-him-disrupt-service\/\" title=\"Health Official Slaps Fines, Criminal Charges Against Church Elders For Refusing To Let Him Disrupt Service\">criminal code<\/a> to let doctors kill their patients. Officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-justice\/news\/2021\/03\/new-medical-assistance-in-dying-legislation-becomes-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">updated<\/a> the law in 2021, removing the requirement that a patient&rsquo;s death be foreseeable. Groups like Dying With Dignity Canada have since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingwithdignity.ca\/blog\/pr_mature_minors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushing<\/a> to expand the euthanasia program to &ldquo;mature minors,&rdquo; and parliament has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parl.ca\/DocumentViewer\/en\/44-1\/AMAD\/meeting-25\/evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debating<\/a> the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PwJkFWKH18s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a> with Wiebe, the disabled actress Liz Carr &mdash; a public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/article\/2024\/may\/14\/liz-carr-acting-friendship-campaign-against-assisted-dying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opponent<\/a> of euthanasia &mdash; asked the doctor if someone like herself would be eligible.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Liz, right now you love life, and you want to live. But there&rsquo;s lots of nasty illnesses you might get,&rdquo; Wiebe replied, breaking out in laughter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The doctor said killing people is her favorite part of the job.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I love my job. You know, I&rsquo;ve always loved being a doctor,&rdquo; Wiebe said. &ldquo;But this is the very best work I&rsquo;ve ever done, in the last seven years. And people ask me why, and I think, well, doctors like grateful patients. And nobody is more grateful than my patients now, and their families.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The typical MAID process seems deceptively peaceful. A doctor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hss.gov.nt.ca\/professionals\/sites\/professionals\/files\/resources\/maid-interim-medication-protocols.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uses<\/a> three <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8920593\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemicals<\/a> to kill the patient, administering Midazolam, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/midazolam-injection-route\/description\/drg-20064813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sedative<\/a>; propofol, which induces a coma and stops breathing; and rocuronium or cisatracurium,&nbsp;muscle&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hss.gov.nt.ca\/professionals\/sites\/professionals\/files\/resources\/maid-interim-medication-protocols.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paralytics<\/a>. The medications render the patient unconscious and paralyzed, creating a morbid illusion of calm &mdash; though the patient is under respiratory <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8920593\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;After they&rsquo;re in a deep coma, then we give the medication that stops the breathing and stops the heart,&rdquo; Wiebe said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PbYHE5ah2kE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webinar<\/a>. &ldquo;They&rsquo;re in a deep coma, and then it&rsquo;s over. &hellip; They&rsquo;re such calm, peaceful deaths.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Raikin, a visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/eppc.org\/author\/alexander_raikin\/\">fellow<\/a> in bioethics at the Ethics and Public Policy Center who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/authors\/alexander-raikin\">writes<\/a> for The New Atlantis, told The Federalist that if doctors fail to follow the MAID regulations and processes specified in criminal code, they void their <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/c-46\/section-241.html#:~:text=241%20(1)%20Everyone%20is%20guilty,person%20to%20die%20by%20suicide.\">exemption<\/a>, and could face charges of assisting a suicide. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you fail to follow any of the safeguards or eligibility criteria, you are then not protected through the criminal code exemptions that allow for euthanasia-assisted suicide,&rdquo; Raikin said. &ldquo;What Canada&rsquo;s example shows is that, in reality, it&rsquo;s impossible to have oversight.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Killing the Vulnerable<\/h2>\n<p>Wiebe has gained positive press from legacy media outlets like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/16\/magazine\/doctor-ellen-wiebe-maid-interview.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nytimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> for killing her patients &mdash; more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/us-world\/article\/ive-helped-hundreds-to-die-my-patients-are-so-grateful-t5dzd5ssz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">430<\/a> of them. She has been repeatedly accused of violating rules governing how doctors kill their patients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While discussing accusations that she approved a patient for MAID without due process, Wiebe said that &ldquo;angry family members are our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/no-other-options\">greatest risk<\/a>,&rdquo; according to The New Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>A judge granted an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bccourts.ca\/jdb-txt\/sc\/24\/20\/2024BCSC2004.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">injunction<\/a> in October to keep Wiebe from executing a woman, 53, with bipolar disorder. After quitting her medication too quickly, the patient began to experience physical symptoms that made her suicidal. The woman then sought Wiebe&rsquo;s assisted suicide services, and at the end of their first call, the doctor allegedly approved her for MAID.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since the woman could not find a witness to sign the MAID form, a volunteer at Wiebe&rsquo;s clinic signed it for her, according to the injunction. The law also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingwithdignity.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DWDC_MAID_AssessmentGuide2024_ENG06ea089ef17d749db890f124d2577915276d6272f1d34b3f4216b9fd79585fab.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requires<\/a> two medical providers to approve a patient for euthanasia, so when the woman could not find approval from a second professional, Wiebe allegedly called in the ironically-named Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/divisionsbc.ca\/rural-and-remote\/our-division\/our-team\/board-members\/liz-whynot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elizabeth Whynot<\/a> to sign off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the woman&rsquo;s husband has been trying to save her life. He claims his wife is ineligible to end her own life, and that Wiebe &ldquo;breached&rdquo; her &ldquo;statutory duty&rdquo; to adhere to the MAID process. <\/p>\n<p>Raikin said family members often have to get involved to save their loved ones&rsquo; lives. &ldquo;The police are just uninterested in this.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Had the husband not intervened, Wiebe would have killed his wife at 8 p.m. on Oct. 27, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bccourts.ca\/jdb-txt\/sc\/24\/20\/2024BCSC2004.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Willow Clinic<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The facility is in the Fairmount Medical Building, which closes at 6 p.m. Ireland said she worked in the same building, on the same floor as Wiebe&rsquo;s facility, for &ldquo;many years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The whole building is closed. &hellip; Nobody&rsquo;s there,&rdquo; Ireland said. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s basically a euthanasia clinic right there that operates after hours in downtown Vancouver.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Wiebe allegedly snuck into Vancouver&rsquo;s Louis Brier Nursing Home, where she <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/jewish-care-home-accuses-doctor-of-sneaking-in-and-killing-someone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed<\/a> 83-year-old patient Barry Hyman, according to the Vancouver Sun. Wiebe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-monday-edition-1.4477708\/doctor-accused-of-sneaking-in-and-killing-someone-at-jewish-nursing-home-says-she-did-nothing-wrong-1.4477714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> Hyman and his family requested this.<\/p>\n<p>Since the nursing home is an Orthodox Jewish institution, it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-doctor-cleared-medically-assisted-dying-complaint-1.5239078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not allow<\/a> euthanasia on the grounds. Louis Brier CEO David Keselman told the Vancouver Sun the killing &ldquo;was <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/jewish-care-home-accuses-doctor-of-sneaking-in-and-killing-someone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hidden<\/a>&rdquo; and &ldquo;there&rsquo;s no documentation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have a lot of Holocaust survivors,&rdquo; Keselman said at the time. &ldquo;They&rsquo;re going to feel like they&rsquo;re at risk when you learn someone was sneaking in and killing someone.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The nursing home filed a complaint against Wiebe with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, but the doctor ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-doctor-cleared-medically-assisted-dying-complaint-1.5239078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cleared<\/a> the review process. &ldquo;There was no discipline, and so she only just continues,&rdquo; Ireland said. &ldquo;The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia has done nothing to stop her.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Wiebe also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/no-other-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed<\/a> a man who was rejected for MAID because he did not have a serious illness and was incapable of making &ldquo;informed decisions&rdquo; about his health, according to The New Atlantis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After previous providers rejected the patient as ineligible, Dying With Dignity Canada referred him to Wiebe, who arranged the rest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He flew all by himself to Vancouver. &hellip; I picked him up at the airport, um, brought him to my clinic and provided for [euthanized] him,&rdquo; Wiebe said, according to The New Atlantis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wiebe said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PbYHE5ah2kE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webinar<\/a> she has faced &ldquo;10 different College [of Physicians and Surgeons] complaints&rdquo; regarding her euthanasia practices. &ldquo;Everyone came out in my favor that I had in fact done everything right.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She will have people come to Vancouver to be killed,&rdquo; Ireland said. &ldquo;She&rsquo;ll meet them at the airport, and then she&rsquo;ll bring them back to her office, and then she&rsquo;ll kill them.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Slaughtering the Unborn<\/h2>\n<p>At the same location Wiebe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bccourts.ca\/jdb-txt\/sc\/24\/20\/2024BCSC2004.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">performs<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PwJkFWKH18s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">euthanasia<\/a> &mdash; the Willow Clinic &mdash; she also performs abortions. The facility offers &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/willowclinic.ca\/medical-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medication abortion<\/a>&rdquo; both in person and through video call appointments. Its website portrays a medical abortion as a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/willowclinic.ca\/medical-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">process<\/a> which appears just like a miscarriage, which can be completed at home.&rdquo; &ldquo;For many people, this is more convenient, comfortable, and private.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The abortion medication is <a href=\"https:\/\/willowclinic.ca\/medical-abortion\/\">fr<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/willowclinic.ca\/medical-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/willowclinic.ca\/medical-abortion\/\">e<\/a> for those with a British Columbia Services Card, but patients are on their own to pay for painkillers.<\/p>\n<p>Wiebe said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PbYHE5ah2kE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webinar<\/a> she has been aborting babies since the 1970s. She complained about facing pressure when she or other abortionists would botch an operation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Autonomy and rights: How MAID and abortion intersect\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PbYHE5ah2kE?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;If a patient had a complication from an abortion &mdash; an infection, a bleed, or whatever &mdash; we&rsquo;d go into the hospital and our work would be scrutinized. And, you know, it was like, &lsquo;Those terrible doctors who do those abortions, what a mess they make,&rsquo;&rdquo; Wiebe said. &ldquo;Our colleagues really would come down on us; there&rsquo;s an enormous stigma. And guess what? We get the same in MAID.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ireland said she has seen Wiebe multiple times &ldquo;over the years&rdquo; while working in the same medical building.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She has a perpetual scowl on her face and never speaks to anyone, not even in passing or to be polite,&rdquo; Ireland said. &ldquo;Oddly, during her interviews, she actually smiles and giggles. &hellip; So bizarre!
