(AP Photo\/Omar Albam)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The president has been largely unsuccessful &mdash; even with military assistance and material aid from the Russian and Iranian militaries. <\/p>\n<p>The rebel forces appear to have launched their campaign at a strategic moment when Russian and Iranian military resources are stretched thin in conflicts elsewhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s a complete upheaval after approximately four years of stability in the country under the control of Assad and the Syrian Arab Army.
