The news network went on to spend millions on political advertisements praising Democrats and opposing Republicans, without disclosing their partisan ties.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Courier Newsroom is a <a href=\"https:\/\/vadogwood.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ocasio-cortez-requests-earmarks-for-two-hospitals-that-perform-abortions\/\" title=\"Ocasio-Cortez Requests Earmarks For Two Hospitals That Perform Abortions\">public benefit corporation<\/a><\/a> that owns and operates a <a href=\"https:\/\/couriernewsroom.com\/local\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">network<\/a> of 11 media outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/couriernewsroom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">presenting themselves<\/a> as trusted sources of &ldquo;local news.&rdquo; These newsrooms, all of which are located in politically competitive states, however, have historically <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/11\/24\/courier-newsroom-dark-money-democrat-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">published<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/courier-newsroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">favorable<\/a> pieces about regional and national Democrats while giving unfavorable coverage to Republicans, all without disclosing Courier&rsquo;s extensive ties to the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund for Policy Reform, part of the Soros family&rsquo;s Open Society Foundations network, gave Courier $15 million in 2023 to support its &ldquo;locally focused journalism,&rdquo; grant records <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/grants\/past?filter_keyword=courier+newsroom&amp;grant_id=OR2023-89995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">show<\/a>. In all previous years combined, Open Society Foundations had given the media operation just $4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Soros, the son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/george-soros-heir-son-alexander-soros-e3c4ca13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">took over<\/a> Open Society Foundations in 2023. The Soros heir, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/entertainment\/3079028\/former-clinton-aide-engagement-george-soros-son\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">since married<\/a> veteran Democratic operative Huma Abedin, described himself as &ldquo;more political&rdquo; than his father in a 2023 <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>interview. The Soros family, primarily George and Alex Soros, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?contributor_name=Soros&amp;two_year_transaction_period=2024&amp;min_date=01%2F01%2F2023&amp;max_date=12%2F31%2F2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">donated millions<\/a> to Democratic political campaigns during the 2024 election cycle, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/committee\/C00693382\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Democracy PAC<\/a>, the Soros family&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/marriott-att-airbnbheres-the-list-of-corporations-announcing-they-wont-donate-to-gop-lawmakers-who-objected-to-electoral-votes-from-contested-states\/\" title=\"Marriott, AT&amp;T, Airbnb\u2026Here\u2019s The List Of Corporations Announcing They Won\u2019t Donate To GOP Lawmakers Who Objected To Electoral Votes From Contested States\">political action committee<\/a>, doled out nearly $60 million primarily to other Democratic committees between January 2023 and October.<\/p>\n<p>After taking millions from the Soros family, Courier went on to spend nearly $11 million on Facebook and Instagram advertisements during the final months of the 2024 election, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1lhf31RDkAg8-Gy7rxVSUg2lsyDcMaURrGtNc79N70fE\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according <\/a>to a <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> analysis of Meta advertising records covering September, October, and November.<\/p>\n<p>Courier&rsquo;s advertisement spending, targeted at voters living in swing states, largely highlighted stories from their publications criticizing Republicans and lauding Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania represented Courier&rsquo;s largest advertising investment in the final months of the 2024 election with the corporation paying roughly $3 million to promote stories from its local branch, the <em>Keystone<\/em>. The publication paid to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=871964995064837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">multiple<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=398070700066859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">stories <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=1385422202831156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">about<\/a> Pennsylvania Republicans voting for Vice President Kamala Harris, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=3743234072595083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">articles<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=455858573651047\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">praising<\/a> her economic policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=1673144116582145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">proposals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?id=578062414567862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">favorable media<\/a> for vulnerable Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA).<\/p>\n<p>Many of the stories Courier paid to promote in Pennsylvania received well over 1 million impressions. Courier spent millions running similar locally targeted advertisements in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=106487520883333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">North Carolina<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=110746996993983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=344690446467832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Arizona<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=126485960550562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">New Hampshire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=1509209726034350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Iowa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=113595901816074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Nevada<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ads\/library\/?active_status=all&amp;ad_type=political_and_issue_ads&amp;country=US&amp;is_targeted_country=false&amp;media_type=all&amp;search_type=page&amp;source=ad-report&amp;view_all_page_id=102540204580217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Wisconsin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alexander Soros at a film screening on May 13, 2019, in New York. Soros Fund Management <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/3190140\/george-soros-audacy-radio-deal-fcc-gop-uproar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">invested<\/a> an undisclosed amount into Crooked Media, which hosts <em>Pod Save America<\/em> and dozens of other popular left-of-center podcasts, in 2022. Later in 2022, Soros Fund Management was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1123935\/george-soros-accused-of-trying-to-silence-conservative-hispanic-voices-with-radio-takeover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">involved<\/a> in Latino Media Network&rsquo;s $60 million purchase of over a dozen Spanish-language radio networks, spurring multiple hosts to leave their shows over editorial disputes. In February, George Soros spent $400 million to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/3190140\/george-soros-audacy-radio-deal-fcc-gop-uproar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">purchase<\/a> a stake in Audacy, the nation&rsquo;s second<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/soros-acquisition-of-200-us-radio-stations-ahead-of-election-being-fast-tracked-by-fcc\/\" title=\"Soros&#039; Acquisition of 200 US Radio Stations Ahead of Election Being Fast-Tracked by FCC\">-largest radio network<\/a>, and in July, Soros Fund Management <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/07\/24\/soros-acquires-stake-in-media-brand-targeting-key-2024-voting-demographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">bought<\/a> a share in Her Campus Media, a portfolio of brands targeting young women.<\/p>\n<p>Courier&rsquo;s ties to the Democratic Party go much deeper than simply receiving funding from the Soros network.<\/p>\n<p>The enterprise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/courier-newsroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">began<\/a> as a project of ACRONYM, a nonprofit organization that has spent millions collaborating with the Democratic Party. PACRONYM, the group&rsquo;s political arm, has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/political-party\/pacronym\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">spent millions<\/a> supporting Democratic campaigns. Democratic megadonors Reid Hoffman and Michael Moritz are among ACRONYM&rsquo;s wealthiest donors.<\/p>\n<p>ACRONYM parted ways with Courier in 2021, selling the collection of media outlets to a company called &ldquo;Good Information Inc.,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/10\/26\/soros-hoffman-disinformation-tara-mcgowan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according<\/a> to <em>Axios<\/em>. George Soros and Hoffman were among the initial backers of the media venture.<\/p>\n<p>Tara McGowan, the organization&rsquo;s founder and current CEO of Good Information Inc., is a longtime Democratic political operative. She worked on President Barack Obama&rsquo;s reelection campaign, as a Democratic senator&rsquo;s press secretary, and has held positions at various liberal advocacy groups before heading Courier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/taramcgowan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according<\/a> to her LinkedIn page.<\/p>\n<p>McGowan justified Courier&rsquo;s existence by arguing in a leaked 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/6771809-Screenshot-PDF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">internal memo<\/a> that the news network exists explicitly to help elect Democrats. Disclosures on Courier&rsquo;s Meta advertisements do not include information about the corporation&rsquo;s funding or links to the Democratic Party, allowing the organization to present its content as nonpartisan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/capitol-police-arrest-man-threatening-to-blow-up-u-s-capitol-after-hours-long-standoff\/\" title=\"Capitol Police Arrest Man Threatening To Blow Up U.S. Capitol After Hours-Long Standoff\">neutral news coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Courier could previously <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/11\/24\/courier-newsroom-dark-money-democrat-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">rely<\/a> on the network of nonprofit organizations managed by Arabella Advisors, among the largest Democratic-aligned dark money networks in the country, for more than $1 million a year in funding.
