Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3106551\/biden-administration-rulemaking-blitzes-aim-trump-proof-federal-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>BIDEN ADMINISTRATION RULEMAKING BLITZES AIM TO TRUMP-PROOF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Duggan has spent the last decade as mayor of Detroit, overseeing the city&rsquo;s gradual revitalization.<\/p>\n<p>In his announcement video, Duggan touted his record fighting for reproductive and LGBT rights but specifically highlighted his resistance to the Defund the Police movement. Duggan credited his decision to increase police officer pay and put hundreds of new officers on the streets with Detroit achieving its lowest number of homicides since the 1960s and halving the frequency of carjackings.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The current system forces people to choose sides, not find solutions,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I want to see if I can change that. I&rsquo;m not running to be the Democrats&rsquo; governor or the Republicans&rsquo; governor. His decision to leave the Democratic Party widens the cracks that emerged following Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kamala Harris<\/a>&lsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">2024<\/a> loss to President-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3220326\/five-democrats-prime-position-face-party-2028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>FIVE DEMOCRATS IN PRIME POSITION TO BE FACE OF THE PARTY IN 2028<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ed Duggan, Mike Duggan&rsquo;s son, notably served as both President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Joe Biden<\/a> and Harris&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/liberals-are-already-panicking-about-trumps-2024-plan\/\" title=\"Liberals Are Already Panicking About Trump&#039;s 2024 Plan\">state campaign director<\/a> in Michigan this cycle, and Democrats&rsquo; underperformance in the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">critical swing state played<\/a> a major factor in Harris&rsquo;s loss.<\/p>\n<p>Adolpho Mongo, a Detroit-based political commentator, called Duggan&rsquo;s decision to leave the party a &ldquo;gutsy move&rdquo; that &ldquo;hurts the Democratic Party.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There have been rumblings from folks that we need a third party, a real one,&rdquo; Mongo said. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no question that he is going to take a ton of Democrats with him. It&rsquo;s also going to free up those moderate Republicans who are not buying MAGA.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg moved his primary address to Michigan in 2022 and has been floated as a Democratic candidate to succeed Whitmer.<\/p>\n<p>State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, former state Attorney General Mike Cox, former state Rep. Tom Leonard, and Rep.
