Six Californians contracted the disease between July 2023\u2063 and \u2064January 2024, \u2063with\u200d ages\u2062 ranging from 17 months to 65 years,\u2063 and most being \u2062female.\u200d All patients \u2063had traveled to or lived in Tecate, Mexico, shortly before showing symptoms and had contact \u2064with dogs, which can harbor\u2062 the brown \u2062dog tick responsible\u200c for the disease.<\/p>\n<p>This\u2063 recent spike in RMSF \u2064cases \u200dis \u2063unusual,\u200d as California\u200b typically\u200c reports only one case \u200bper year based on data\u2063 from 2011 to 2019. RMSF \u200dcan be difficult to diagnose due to symptoms that overlap with\u2062 other diseases, and there\u2063 is no rapid testing available. Ticks can also be found in your belly button, neck, hairline, top of the head and behind the ears.<\/p>\n<p>If you find a tick, don&rsquo;t remove it with your bare hand. Use tweezers and grab as close to its head and mouth &mdash; closest to your skin &mdash; as you can.
