Historically, this demographic has leaned towards the Democratic Party, \u2064but recent elections have shown a notable change. For instance, in \u200dseventeen Native American-majority counties, support for President-elect Donald Trump increased by more than 10%. \u2062Polling\u200d indicates that in South \u2064Dakota, all nine counties \u2062with a Native American majority\u2063 leaned right in the recent election, while a significant \u2063shift was observed in New Mexico&#8217;s McKinley County and \u200bNorth Dakota&#8217;s Sioux County, both with 81% Native American populations.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly in swing states like Arizona,\u2062 where the Native American population is substantial, support for Democratic\u2063 candidates \u2062dropped sharply\u2014from \u206234% for President Biden in 2020 to just 19% for Vice President Kamala Harris in the latest election. In North Carolina, despite comprising only 3%\u200d of the population, the Lumbee tribe has shown a \u2064trend toward Republican candidates, exemplified by Trump&#8217;s win in Robeson County with a 4% increase compared to the last election.<\/p>\n<p>In Montana, the close Senate race between incumbent Democrat Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy revealed similar trends, with significant shifts in favor of Sheehy observed in counties with Native American majorities. In New Mexico&rsquo;s McKinley County, consisting of 81% Native Americans, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">voters shifted 14 points<\/a> to the right, and North Dakota&rsquo;s Sioux County, also 81% Native American,&nbsp; moved 10 points.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps what is most notable is how Native American voters swung in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blake-masters-to-launch-another-senate-bid-in-coming-weeks-report\/\" title=\"Blake Masters plans to announce his second Senate campaign soon, according to reports.\">presidential swing states<\/a> and competitive Senate races.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For instance, in Arizona, the swing state with the largest population of Native Americans, support from Native American voters dropped from 34% for President Joe Biden in 2020 to 19% for Vice President Kamala Harris this election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osbm.nc.gov\/blog\/2021\/11\/10\/native-american-population-sees-notable-increase-2020-census#:~:text=Statewide%2C%203%25%20of%20the%20population,state%20and%20county%20population%20data.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Just<\/a> 3% of North Carolina&rsquo;s population is Native American &mdash; making it a voting bloc with minimal sway in deciding statewide elections, much less presidential. Though a small percentage of the electorate, the Lumbee tribe, predominantly concentrated in Robeson County, has been making a shift toward Trump since 2016. Winning 63.3% of the vote, Trump saw a 4% jump in the county compared to four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>While Montana may not have been competitive in the presidential race, the Senate race between incumbent Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Republican Sen.-elect Tim Sheehy showed tight polling until the very end. Ultimately, Sheehy won comfortably, capturing 52.6% of the vote compared to Tester&rsquo;s 45.5%. Glacier and Blaine counties, which hold Native American majorities, both saw the sharpest shifts in favor of Sheehy.<\/p>\n<p>While Tester may have advocated the sovereignty of Native American tribes, academics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/native-americans-shift-right\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">found<\/a> that 80% of Native Americans&rsquo; voting decisions were not based mostly on tribal issues such as coal mining and oil and gas drilling rights. Instead, Native Americans, like most Americans, were influenced by economic factors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Native American populations are disproportionately affected by inflation and economic hardship, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poll-shows-growing-democratic-opposition-to-cheap-labor-migration\/\" title=\"Poll Shows Growing Democratic Opposition to Cheap Labor Migration\">median household income<\/a> just $35,310 compared to $51,371 for the United States as a whole.
