Her Democratic challenger, Derek\u200c Tran,\u2062 won the tight race with \u206450.1% of the vote compared to\u2064 Steel&#8217;s 49.9%, a \u200bmargin of\u2064 just 613 votes. Steel&#8217;s loss marks an essential victory for Democrats as they \u2064strive to\u200c narrow the\u2063 Republican majority \u2064in the House.<\/p>\n<p>In her\u200b concession statement, Steel expressed \u2064gratitude\u200c towards her\u200b supporters, family, and volunteers, and remarked on the end of this chapter as a prelude to new beginnings. Notably, Steel was targeted by Democrats due to her \u2064representation of a district that President Biden won\u200d in 2020, emphasizing the race&#8217;s competitive nature.<\/p>\n<p>As of her concession, three House races were still undecided, including those in California\u2062 and Iowa. Michelle Steel (R-CA) conceded defeat in her reelection bid for California&rsquo;s 45th Congressional District, notching a key win for Democrats in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3244002\/house-races-uncalled-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">one of the most competitive races of the 2024 cycle<\/a> and further narrowing Republicans&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3237309\/california-house-race-too-close-two-weeks-after\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">already slim majority<\/a> in the lower chamber. <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Steel <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MichelleSteelCA\/status\/1861863826913640535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">acknowledged<\/a> her loss in a statement on Wednesday shortly before the <em>Associated Press <\/em>officially <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AP_Politics\/status\/1861878760183632154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"called\">called<\/a> the race in favor of her Democratic challenger Derek Tran. Tran won with <br \/>50.1% of the vote to Steel&rsquo;s 49.9% and led by just 613 votes three weeks after Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I owe a debt of gratitude to my supporters, my staff, my family, my daughters and especially my husband, Shawn, for standing by me through endless campaigns,&rdquo; Steel wrote. &ldquo;To my volunteers, we would never have made it this far without your tireless efforts. And, to the voters, thank you. I will never stop fighting for you.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MichelleSteelCA\/status\/1861863826913640535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"added\">added<\/a>: &ldquo;Everything is God&rsquo;s will and, like all journeys, this one is ending for a new one to begin.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Steel became a top target for Democrats in the 2024 cycle as she was one of only 17 House Republicans running for reelection in a district that President Joe Biden won in 2020. The nonpartisan <em>Cook Political Report<\/em> deemed the seat a toss-up and rated it D+2<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tran already declared victory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disgraced-lincoln-project-founder-john-weaver-settled-300k-tax-bill-on-election-day\/\" title=\"Disgraced Lincoln Project Founder John Weaver Settled 0K Tax Bill on Election Day\">race earlier<\/a> this week despite the absence of an official call. It was one of just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3244002\/house-races-uncalled-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"three House races\">three House races<\/a> that lingered earlier Wednesday, in addition to California&rsquo;s 13th Congressional District, held by Rep. John Duarte (R-CA), and Iowa&rsquo;s 1st Congressional District, held by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA). Shortly after Steel&rsquo;s concession, the <em>Associated Press<\/em> also called the Iowa race for Miller-Meeks, besting her opponent, Christina Bohannan.<\/p>\n<p>In the final race, current projections show Duarte&rsquo;s challenger, Democratic candidate Adam Gray, leading the Republican incumbent.<\/p>\n<p>If those numbers hold, Republicans will have a 220-215 majority &mdash; an even smaller majority than the one they have struggled with over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, those numbers will not last for long. Republicans are expected to start the year with at least three vacancies in the seats held by former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dhs-secretary-defends-use-of-title-42-to-expel-illegal-immigrants\/\" title=\"DHS Secretary Defends Use of Title 42 to Expel Illegal Immigrants\">resigned earlier<\/a> this month, and Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Mike Waltz (R-FL), who will join the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those vacancies would leave the House makeup at 217-215, giving Republicans only a one-seat majority &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3242637\/trump-cabinet-recruits-house-complicate-100-day-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"raising concerns\">raising concerns<\/a> among members about how much of President-elect Donald Trump&rsquo;s agenda they will be able to accomplish in the first 100 days.
