The ultimate goals of the publicly-funded research project were to &ldquo;inform the development and evaluation of an intervention to promote mental health&rdquo; for transgender people in India and to &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">impact rapidly evolving transgender health<\/a> and social policies in India and beyond.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the study investigated the prevalence of mental health conditions, such as anxiety and suicidality, among transgender people in India. It sought to understand what variables were contributing to the occurrence of those conditions. The framework used by the team of Drexel researchers aimed to &ldquo;put the gender back into transgender health,&rdquo; according to the grant&rsquo;s description.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers argued that their work is necessary because the &ldquo;transgender community is experiencing major socio-legal changes that may affect mental health&rdquo; in India. One of the policy recommendations made in the final report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareaptn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-10-16-OHM-Digital-Report-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">produced<\/a> by the team of researchers was to implement public funding for &ldquo;gender-affirmative healthcare,&rdquo; including hormone therapy and sex change surgeries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3222408\/joe-biden-lame-duck-session-trump-proof-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>BIDEN TO USE LAME-DUCK SESSION TO &lsquo;TRUMP-PROOF&rsquo; LEGACY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>HHS has positioned itself as a champion of the transgender community under Biden, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2981867\/biden-administration-mandate-healthcare-workers-treatment-transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">adopting<\/a> a new rule in April requiring physicians and healthcare personnel to provide transgender healthcare to patients, including minors. Critics have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3016944\/republicans-introduce-measure-cancel-hhs-rule-transgender-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">argued<\/a> that the rule doesn&rsquo;t grant sufficient exceptions for healthcare providers who have religious reasons to refuse to practice transgender medical interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2249180\/transgender-biden-administration-health-official-to-be-sworn-in-as-four-star-admiral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">appointed <\/a>Adm. Rachel Levine, a biological male who identifies as a woman, as the assistant secretary of HHS and the head of the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service in 2021. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Since joining HHS, Levine has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3059479\/biden-officials-pressured-remove-age-limits-transgender-surgeries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushed&nbsp;<\/a>to loosen limits on transgender surgeries for minors, alongside other p<\/span>riorities advocated by LGBT activists.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Adm. The first, from January 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-preventing-and-combating-discrimination-on-basis-of-gender-identity-or-sexual-orientation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ordered<\/a> all federal agencies to combat discrimination against transgender individuals, and another, from June 2022, explicitly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2022\/06\/15\/executive-order-on-advancing-equality-for-lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-queer-and-intersex-individuals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">called on<\/a> HHS to &ldquo;seek funding opportunities related to health, including mental health, for LGBTQI+ individuals.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has approved several grants aimed at supporting members of the LGBT community living in India. For instance, tax dollars routed through the State Department went toward <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/04\/22\/biden-admin-trans-india-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">training<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/02\/06\/state-department-create-army-lgbtqi-allies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">thousands<\/a> of protransgender activists in the country.
