House Administration Oversight Subcommittee Chairman⁢ Barry‌ Loudermilk has raised concerns about Byrd’s promotion⁢ despite a lengthy history‍ of disciplinary issues. In a letter sent this past Wednesday and published by Just The News, House Administration Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk addressed U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger. Loudermilk inquired about the promotion process for U.S. Capitol Police officers, specifically regarding Michael Byrd, the officer involved in Babbitt’s death. Although Byrd was reportedly promoted in August 2023, Loudermilk’s letter suggests he should not have been on the force due to a troubling disciplinary history dating back to the early 2000s. Just The News summarized key points from that letter:

Byrd has a record of failing an FBI background check for firearm purchase, not passing a shotgun qualification test, being suspended for losing his weapon, and facing state prosecution in Maryland after firing at fleeing stolen vehicles—an incident from 2004 where he shot while his neighbor was within range. Additionally, Byrd left a loaded service weapon unattended in a bathroom at the Capitol Visitor’s Center for over 55 minutes before it was discovered by another officer; this led to a suspension without pay for 33 days. The letter also mentions an altercation between Byrd and another officer during a football game in Montgomery County in 2015.

Loudermilk pointed out that their investigation into Byrd is still ongoing as some records are missing: “USCP records indicate three additional USCP OPR [Office of Professional Responsibility] referrals against Byrd; however, related investigation records are reportedly missing,” he stated.

Given Byrd’s long history of irresponsible firearm handling—losing weapons and shooting at vehicles—it raises questions about how he was allowed to serve as an officer during such critical events on January 6th when no trust should have been placed in him by USCP.

Byrd claimed he “saved lives” by shooting Babbitt; she remains the only person killed that day despite numerous false narratives surrounding those events. Officer Brian Sicknick died from natural causes shortly after January 6th while four other officers later took their own lives—none were killed or injured physically due to actions taken by Trump supporters present that day.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg stated that President-elect Donald Trump had requested National Guard presence on January 6th but was denied; Trump himself urged people via Twitter to “stay peaceful.” This narrative aimed at vilifying both Trump and his supporters is unfounded—and evidence like Byrd’s record supports this claim

[33651
37566,45575,45577,40246,45576
post-2372571","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-ashlibabbitt","tag-copdisciplinaryrecord","tag-justicereform","tag-lawenforcement","tag-policeaccountability
["GET
