In‍ a response to the ⁣backlash, Fetterman defended his approach, highlighting the importance of having an open dialog and noting that ‍his vote‍ would likely have little impact given the Republican majority in ‌the Senate. While acknowledging that Oz may not have been the preferred choice for many⁤ Democrats, Fetterman stated that if Oz aimed to improve Medicare and Medicaid, he would consider voting ‍in favor of him.

Fetterman’s remarks are particularly notable given the intense rivalry he had with Oz during the 2022 Pennsylvania Senate race, where he ultimately defeated Oz. Despite the history and differing ‌political views,⁣ Fetterman expressed that he holds no⁢ personal animosity towards Oz. This stance has drawn ire from some of Fetterman’s former staff members, who feel betrayed, citing concerns over Oz’s previous ⁤comments and policies related to healthcare. However, Fetterman has chosen to focus on potential positive outcomes, suggesting that if Oz can effectively reduce waste within the system, it would be ‍beneficial.

Fetterman rips Democrats’ ‘freakouts’ about his tentative support for Oz

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) rebuked critics who found his bipartisan spirit toward Dr. Mehmet Oz, the incoming Trump administration’s nominee to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, distasteful.

President-elect Donald Trump nominated Oz to oversee the federal program on Tuesday, sparking a move from Fetterman to break from the Democratic Party and express his possible support for the physician.

Responding to negative reactions from Democrats on Friday, Fetterman slammed the “freakouts” and explained that if he voted to confirm Oz in the Senate, his move likely wouldn’t affect the results as Republicans hold the majority in the upper chamber.

Saying he just wanted an “open dialogue” and mocking the “hot takes online,” the senator said in a post to X: “Math is math: GOP has 53 votes and Oz has a new job. … He doesn’t have to give a s*** about Dem votes, and same for the remaining nominees.

Freakouts are rarely illuminating.
