href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lawsuit-arizonas-ranked-choice-voting-ballot-initiative-is-illegal\/\" title=\"Lawsuit: Arizona&#039;s Ranked-Choice Voting Ballot Initiative Is Illegal\">ballot initiative seeking<\/a> to repeal the state&rsquo;s ranked-choice voting (RCV) system was narrowly defeated by 664 votes. The result comes after millions in out-of-state dark money flooded Alaska to defeat the measure. <\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/11\/05\/us\/elections\/results-alaska-measure-2-repeal-ranked-choice-voting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>, unofficial results show <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Alaska_Ballot_Measure_2,_Repeal_Top-Four_Ranked-Choice_Voting_Initiative_(2024)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ballot Measure 2<\/a> receiving 160,619 &ldquo;no&rdquo; votes and 159,955 &ldquo;yes&rdquo; votes (50.1 to 49.9 percent). The measure was <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskawatchman.com\/2024\/08\/22\/alaska-supreme-court-rejects-move-to-block-voters-from-repealing-ranked-choice-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> for ballot access earlier this year following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adn.com\/politics\/2024\/08\/22\/alaskans-will-vote-on-whether-to-repeal-ranked-choice-voting-under-supreme-court-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lengthy legal battle<\/a> and sought to repeal Alaska&rsquo;s top-four RCV system, which voters <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Alaska_Ballot_Measure_2,_Top-Four_Ranked-Choice_Voting_and_Campaign_Finance_Laws_Initiative_(2020)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">narrowly adopted<\/a> in the 2020 general election.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-42c746f449af4ea74bd481de929d2340 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-42c746f449af4ea74bd481de929d2340\"><\/div>\n<p>Under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/ranked-choice-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranked-choice voting<\/a>, electors rank candidates of all parties in order of preference. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the first round of voting, the last-place finisher is eliminated, and his votes are reallocated to the voter&rsquo;s second-choice candidate. This process continues until one candidate receives a majority of votes.<\/p>\n<p>RCV has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/31\/ranked-choice-voting-is-the-monster-under-the-bed-of-american-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largely<\/a>&nbsp;been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/15\/communists-cheer-ranked-choice-voting-as-a-weapon-for-defeating-conservatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushed<\/a>&nbsp;by Democrats and has led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/01\/sarah-palin-should-blame-lisa-murkowski-for-her-special-election-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrat<\/a> victory of seats for which Republican candidates ultimately received the majority vote. It has also been shown to&nbsp;produce&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/17\/minnesota-could-be-third-state-to-adopt-ranked-choice-voting-following-alaska-and-maine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inaccurate election results<\/a> as well high rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/06\/watch-how-ranked-choice-voting-complicates-elections-and-disenfranchises-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discarded ballots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Alaska, for instance, Democrat Mary Peltola <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/11\/ranked-choice-voting-keeps-rigging-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a> the state&rsquo;s 2022 special congressional race, despite &ldquo;nearly 60 percent of voters casting their ballots for a Republican,&rdquo; as The Federalist has previously noted. Peltola is projected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/11\/05\/us\/elections\/results-alaska.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lose<\/a> her 2024 reelection bid to Republican Nick Begich. Two GOP candidates who qualified for the 2024 general election ballot <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/peltola-begich-alaska-house-e57bf9cf11a2668ffe67e40d840979f2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped out<\/a> prior to the contest to bolster Begich&rsquo;s chances of winning in the RCV system.<\/p>\n<p>RCV also played a key&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/14\/after-ranked-choice-voting-rigged-their-elections-alaska-conservatives-fight-to-reclaim-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">role<\/a>&nbsp;in ensuring GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski&rsquo;s reelection over a Trump-backed challenger during the 2022 midterms. As The Federalist&rsquo;s Tristan Justice previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/09\/alaskas-ranked-choice-voting-scheme-was-a-plot-to-save-murkowski-but-it-also-doomed-palin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, Murkowski operatives were behind the 2020 effort to pass RCV in the state.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a0ff7886477b92d34b1fff84edf2e86d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a0ff7886477b92d34b1fff84edf2e86d\"><\/div>\n<p>Phil Izon, who helped spearhead the campaign to pass Measure 2, <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskapublic.org\/2024\/11\/20\/alaskas-ranked-choice-repeal-measure-fails-by-664-votes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> said &ldquo;he planned to submit a recount request once the election is certified, though he said he was &lsquo;not optimistic&rsquo; it would change the outcome,&rdquo; according to Alaska Public Media. Alaska law stipulates that recount requests must be submitted &ldquo;within five days of state certification,&rdquo; and will be paid for by the state &ldquo;if the margin of victory is less than 20 votes or 0.5% of the votes cast,&rdquo; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Recount_laws_in_Alaska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ballotpedia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The measure&rsquo;s presumed defeat highlights an unfortunate system in which out-of-state interests are able to influence Alaskans into dramatically altering public policy by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bloomberg-biden-sets-new-record-taking-dark-money-donations\/\" title=\"Bloomberg: Biden sets new record taking dark money donations\">unlimited dark money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/11\/report-campaign-to-repeal-alaskas-ranked-choice-voting-system-is-being-outspent-100-to-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, a recent analysis revealed the left-wing funded group that campaigned against Measure 2 outspent the initiative&rsquo;s supporters by a hundredfold using funds predominantly received from pro-RCV organizations residing in other states. According to a report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/the-newsroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left-wing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskabeacon.com\/briefs\/alaska-ranked-choice-voting-repeal-effort-outraised-a-hundredfold-campaign-finance-filings-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alaska Beacon<\/a> which cited financial disclosures, the groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/political-party\/unite-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unite America<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/11\/report-campaign-to-repeal-alaskas-ranked-choice-voting-system-is-being-outspent-100-to-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Article IV<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/action-now-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Now Initiative LLC<\/a> &mdash; all of which are based in the Lower 48 &mdash; were among the No on 2 campaign&rsquo;s &ldquo;top three contributors,&rdquo; according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Unfinalized results also show Alaska voters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/11\/05\/us\/elections\/results-alaska-measure-1-raise-minimum-wage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Alaska_Ballot_Measure_1,_Minimum_Wage_Increase_and_Paid_Sick_Leave_Initiative_(2024)\">Ballot Measure 1<\/a>, an initiative raising the state&rsquo;s minimum wage, implementing regulations regarding paid sick leave, and barring employers from &ldquo;taking adverse action against employees who refuse to attend employer-sponsored meetings regarding political or religious matters,&rdquo; according to Ballotpedia.
