Committee ‌Chair Michael ⁤Guest stated there wasn’t an agreement to publish the report, particularly since Gaetz resigned from‌ his position just as Trump’s ‌nomination⁣ for attorney general was announced. Guest explained that the⁢ committee loses jurisdiction ⁤over ‌a member once they resign, which eliminates the possibility of issuing a report.

House Speaker Mike Johnson supported⁤ this position, claiming that releasing a report after a⁤ member has left Congress would violate established protocols. The investigation into Gaetz began in 2021 while the House was under Democratic leadership, and although the Justice Department initially investigated, it later dropped the case, citing ‌insufficient grounds⁣ for prosecution.

As Gaetz faces a confirmation vote for a new role, some senators have expressed the desire to review the investigation’s findings, believing that an unclassified version might be leaked and ⁢advocating for transparency. Gaetz has characterized the ethics investigation as ⁤politically motivated retaliation related⁣ to his involvement in the removal ‌of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. In ‍a recent meeting with Republican senators, Gaetz received‍ warnings about ‍the potential ⁣disclosure of information related to ⁣the allegations. The committee consists of five Republicans and five Democrats. Guest previously mentioned that timing is crucial since Gaetz resigned on the same day Trump announced his attorney general pick. According to Fox News, he explained that if Gaetz resigns while taking a position in the administration, the Ethics Committee would lose jurisdiction and therefore would not issue a report—a situation not unique to this case. House Speaker Mike Johnson also indicated that releasing a report after a member has left would be a significant breach of protocol, as noted by The New York Times.

The investigation into Gaetz began in 2021 when Democrats controlled the House, while the Justice Department also conducted an inquiry but dropped it in February due to insufficient evidence for prosecution.
