This strike spans across ten campuses, \u200cfive medical centers, and various laboratories, stemming from claims of unfair bargaining\u2064 practices by the university. \u2064The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal \u200cEmployees Local 3299 (AFSCME) expressed frustration over the university&#8217;s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">raise employee healthcare premiums<\/a> and copays without proper communication. Negotiations have been stagnant since May, following the expiration of contracts for patient and service workers. AFSCME&#8217;s president criticized the university&#8217;s approach, \u200calleging a lack of transparency and \u2064inadequate responsiveness in the \u2064bargaining process. The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 3299 union <a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/id\/urn:aaid:sc:VA6C2:f2298e07-b760-40d8-9450-446681b36225?viewer%21megaVerb=group-discover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"filed a complaint\">filed a complaint<\/a> to the Public Employment Relations Board when UC raised premiums by 2% and copays by 50%, among other changes, for the next contract without informing its employees.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations haven&rsquo;t taken place since May, when the AFSCME rejected a contract with a $25 an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/under-trump-americans-have-seen-their-best-wage-growth-in-40-years\/\" title=\"Under Trump, Americans Have Seen Their Best Wage Growth In 40 Years\">hour minimum wage<\/a> and a 5% raise beginning July 1. Filing a ULP does not mean there has been a finding of wrongdoing by the university.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AFSCME members have the same 2024 rates for health insurance until a new contract is created. UC has sent 26 proposals and 36 counterproposals during negotiations, and claims it is awaiting another response from the union.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The strike is meant to protest this alleged unfair practice and will end on Thursday at 6 p.m. Pacific time. Fellow union University Professional and Technical Employees also announced a strike among its 4,000 members.<\/p>\n<p>The number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/labor-unions-lash-out-over-job-killing-energy-policies\/\" title=\"Labor unions lash out over job killing energy policies\">union workers<\/a> who qualify for government-subsidized housing has tripled since 2017, according to the AFSCME. Some chose to commute multiple hours or sleep in their cars to afford to work for the university.
