They insisted Trump was some kind of criminal mastermind and claimed that this narrative was confirmed when a jury of &ldquo;peers&rdquo; convicted him in May in a Manhattan <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/30\/kangaroo-court-convicts-trump-following-soviet-show-trial-in-new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But now that Trump won the election, the Manhattan case brought against him is falling apart at the seams. On Tuesday, New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manhattan-da-trump-hush-money-letter-immunity-next-steps.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed<\/a> to indefinitely delay Donald Trump&rsquo;s sentencing &mdash; previously set for next week &mdash; after the former president was re-elected in a landslide victory. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6511c3793f8dd4388a10b38b386c5890 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6511c3793f8dd4388a10b38b386c5890\"><\/div>\n<p>But certainly there should be no hesitation about sentencing a 34-time &ldquo;felon&rdquo; like Trump &mdash; unless the case was never about &ldquo;justice&rdquo; or the &ldquo;law.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Bragg claimed Trump made payments to his then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, who then allegedly paid pornographer Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about an alleged affair &mdash; but Bragg <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">failed to clarify<\/a> exactly how such alleged actions were illegal. It&rsquo;s a case that the Federal Elections Commission, Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Southern District of New York&rsquo;s U.S. Attorney&rsquo;s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/31\/guilty-trump-verdict-will-keep-good-people-from-running-for-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declined<\/a> to bring.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg, in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/09\/magazine\/alvin-bragg-donald-trump-trial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zeal<\/a> to destroy Trump, enlisted the help of Colangelo (who was formerly No. 3 in President Joe Biden&rsquo;s DOJ and was hired to reportedly &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/12\/manhattan-d-a-enlisted-a-whos-who-of-biden-admin-buddies-for-trump-takedown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jump-start<\/a>&rdquo; the investigation) and argued that Trump should have classified the alleged payments as a campaign expense rather than a legal fee. He <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> the payments were made to influence the 2016 election. Cohen, however, blew up Bragg&rsquo;s argument while on the stand, confirming to the court that when the allegations first surfaced in 2011, Trump was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/17\/3-moments-star-witness-michael-cohen-just-undermined-braggs-get-trump-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concerned<\/a> about how the story would affect his family.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s sentencing was scheduled for Nov. 26. Just over a week ago, Colangelo asked Judge Juan Merchan to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/12\/biden-donor-judge-delays-proceedings-in-lawfare-case-after-trumps-landslide-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">delay proceedings<\/a>&nbsp;until his team could figure out its course of action following Trump&rsquo;s victory. Merchan gave prosecutors until Nov. 19 to make a decision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ba7445a760863830d127105105382189 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ba7445a760863830d127105105382189\"><\/div>\n<p>In his Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/manhattan-da-trump-hush-money-letter-immunity-next-steps.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to the court, Bragg acknowledged the possibility of delaying the sentencing until after Trump&rsquo;s upcoming term.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[C]onsideration must be given to various non-dismissal options &hellip; such as deferral of all remaining criminal proceedings until after the end of Defendant&rsquo;s upcoming presidential term,&rdquo; Bragg said.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&rsquo;s letter from Bragg and his team agreeing to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">delay proceedings means<\/a> one thing &mdash; this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-delicate-talks-led-to-unlikely-end-of-assanges-12-year-saga-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"How delicate talks led to unlikely end of Assange\u2019s 12-year saga - Washington Examiner\">case wasn&#038;rsquo<\/a>;t about &ldquo;justice&rdquo; or &ldquo;the law.&rdquo; It was about interfering in the 2024 election and trying to toss Trump in jail so that he couldn&rsquo;t land in the White House.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5ab2c945f8ea59c84a52524f388c2159 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5ab2c945f8ea59c84a52524f388c2159\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
