Roy Cooper (D-NC), whose successor, Attorney General Josh Stein, handily won his bid for governor over the scandal-plagued Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mark-robinson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mark Robinson<\/a>, credited the victories with &ldquo;quality candidates.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think we had quality candidates running for office against right-wing extremists, and the people of North Carolina made the right choices,&rdquo; he <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-carolina-election-democrats-governor-stein-1548a39fc2207f187785d3a65b217b89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have a history of non-presidential victories in the swing state, winning eight of the past nine gubernatorial elections. Republicans have won 11 of the past 12 presidential elections, the one exception being 2008.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3220431\/how-elon-musk-helped-trump-back-to-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>HOW ELON MUSK HELPED WILL TRUMP BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most easily explainable Democratic win was in the gubernatorial election, where a bombshell article from CNN a month before the election revealed that Robinson had called himself a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mark-robinson-not-dropping-out-of-north-carolina-governors-race-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Mark Robinson not dropping out of North Carolina governor&#039;s race - Washington Examiner\">black nazi&#038;rdquo<\/a>; and made other controversial remarks on a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">pornographic site years back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Mark Robinson was such a, what we would call in political science, such a flawed candidate that it would&rsquo;ve been impossible for him to have garnered the same kind of enthusiasm that Trump did in North Carolina,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcnews.com\/news\/politics\/election\/north-carolina-elections\/why-nc-voted-for-trump-then-elected-several-democrats-for-top-state-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> Susan Roberts, a political science professor at Davidson College.<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina voters were also not persuaded by the Democrats&rsquo; national strategy of portraying Republicans as extremists in contrast with their own centrism, which largely failed.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have a number of voters in North Carolina who tend to think that national Democratic candidates are too liberal but are more willing to support more moderate local candidates,&rdquo; said Eric Heberlig, a political science professor at UNC Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David McLeannan, a political science <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">professor<\/a> at Meredith College in Raleigh, said that the discrepancy between the national and state races reflects North Carolinians&rsquo; unique view of politics.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;People are unhappy and want to see change at the federal level.
