Reports from ‌South Korean sources indicate that ⁢as of Thursday ⁣morning, outlets like Rodong Sinmun and the Korean ⁢Central News Agency had not acknowledged the U.S. election results. Historical context shows that North Korean⁣ media took 11 days to report on Trump’s ⁢win in 2016, leading officials ⁢to speculate about a similar delay this time.

The silence from⁣ Pyongyang‍ is curious, especially considering Trump’s ‍history of fiery ⁢rhetoric ⁣toward⁣ North Korea, which included labeling Kim Jong-un as “Little Rocket Man” and ⁤affirming his own nuclear capabilities on ⁢social media. Trump’s administration saw him ⁤engage directly with Kim during several summits ⁣aimed at denuclearization, ⁤yet recently, tensions have resurface with North Korea ramping up ⁣missile ‍tests prior to the election.

In the wake of Trump’s departure ⁣from office, North Korea has forged stronger ties with Russia and has resumed⁣ its missile testing ⁣activities. According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, as of Thursday morning, North Korean media outlets Rodong Sinmun and the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) had not acknowledged the outcome of the November 5 U.S. election. A South Korean Unification Ministry official stated they would monitor the situation closely, noting North Korea’s tendency to delay reporting on U.S. election results. The JoongAng Daily highlighted that it took North Korean media 11 days to report Trump’s win in 2016, making their current silence surprising given Trump’s previous focus on North Korea during his first term; one might expect at least a provocative statement from Pyongyang.

During his presidency, Trump referred to Kim Jong-un as “Little Rocket Man” and famously tweeted about having a more powerful nuclear button than Kim’s in January 2018. Trump met with Kim in Singapore in June 2018 and again in Hanoi in February 2019 but cut that summit short due to lack of progress on nuclear talks. However, he made history by crossing into North Korea for a third meeting with Kim in June 2019.

Trump’s approach seemed effective as there were no long-range missile tests from North Korea between November 2017 and the end of his presidency, according to Reuters. Yet leading up to last week’s election, Kim resumed aggressive posturing by test-launching new intercontinental ballistic missiles and claiming advancements toward striking the U.S.

Since Trump left office, relations between North Korea and Russia have strengthened significantly; recently deploying troops for combat in Ukraine and supplying Russia with drones and munitions.

In March 2017, shortly after taking office, Trump was warned by outgoing President Obama that addressing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions would be an urgent national security challenge.
