However, that meeting was unexpectedly canceled, raising questions about the implications\u200c of releasing the report, especially given Gaetz&#8217;s recent resignation from Congress.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson took\u2064 a stance\u2063 against the release of \u2064the report, urging the Ethics Committee to maintain confidentiality\u200b by stating that it is\u2064 not customary for the committee to issue reports on former members. Matt Gaetz<\/a> (R-FL), reversing course from earlier this week when he told reporters he would not get involved.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to strongly request that the Ethics Committee not issue the report because that is not the way we do things in the House,&rdquo; Johnson told reporters Friday. &ldquo;The rules of the House have always been that a former member is beyond the jurisdiction of the Ethics Committee, and so I don&rsquo;t think that&rsquo;s relevant.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson&rsquo;s response is a change in tune from earlier this week when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/del-democrats-facing-accusations-of-racism-violence\/\" title=\"Del. Democrats facing accusations of racism, violence\">speaker told reporters<\/a> he &ldquo;is not involved&rdquo; in the committee&rsquo;s decision to release the report, even going so far as to say he &ldquo;can&rsquo;t be involved in that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Questions began to swirl about whether the committee should release its findings into Gaetz after President-elect Donald Trump nominated the Florida Republican for attorney general, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3229931\/matt-gaetz-resignation-congress-replacement-florida-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">prompting him to resign<\/a> from his House seat right away. The Ethics Committee was reportedly scheduled to meet this week to vote on releasing the report, raising eyebrows about whether the timing of Gaetz&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3230211\/matt-gaetz-ethics-report-threatens-derail-senate-confirmation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"departure is suspicious\">departure is suspicious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>House GOP leaders were quick to distance themselves from that decision, telling reporters they have nothing to do with the Ethics Committee&rsquo;s decisions or timing on its reports. However, it is not clear if Johnson shifted his tone because of private conversations with Trump.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not talking to anybody about what I&rsquo;ve said to Trump,&rdquo; Johnson told reporters when asked if the president-elect played a role in his comments.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, lawmakers on the Ethics Committee have maintained they would not break precedent to release the report. Because Gaetz resigned, the committee no longer has jurisdiction over the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What happens in ethics is confidential,&rdquo; Committee Chairman Michael Guest (R-MS) told reporters on Thursday. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to maintain that confidentiality.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>However, it remains unclear if the report will eventually be made public if it is handed over to the Senate, which must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3230211\/matt-gaetz-ethics-report-threatens-derail-senate-confirmation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">hold a confirmation hearing<\/a> for Gaetz before he can be elevated to the position of attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>Since April 2021, the House Ethics Committee has been investigating allegations the Florida lawmaker may have &ldquo;engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/college-football-legend-and-his-school-are-getting-the-heisman-trophy-back-report\/\" title=\"Report: College Football Icon and His Alma Mater to Receive Heisman Trophy Again\">accepted improper gifts<\/a>, dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>ABC News <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/woman-testified-house-ethics-committee-gaetz-sex-17\/story?id=115867555\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reported\">reported<\/a> that a woman who was part of a yearslong Justice Department investigation into <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">sex trafficking allegations testified<\/a> to the ethics committee that Gaetz had sex with her when she was 17 years old. Gaetz has denied all the allegations and the the federal investigation resulted in no charges against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-ag-nominee-wont-commit-to-keeping-durham-as-special-counsel\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s AG nominee won\u2019t commit to keeping Durham as special counsel\">attorney general nominee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rep.
